Tube Challenge Parkrun World Cup II (Scrabble)

Post by Soup Dragon » 15 Apr 2019, 22:12

The second World Cup will be totally random and not based on who is the fastest. The rules are as follows:

THE FIRST ROUND IS UNDERWAY AND RUNS FOR THE WHOLE OF APRIL!!!

1. Each round will last one calendar month (so you have 4 or 5 chances to get your highest possible score)
2. The scoring system will be based on the name of the course you run, in scrabble letter values. It is only the common name of the course that counts, e.g. Brockwell Parkrun, Herne Hill, would only be classed as Brockwell. Parkrun Zary would only be classed as Zary.
3. The letter value of the course will then be adjusted depending upon the final second of your time at that course.
4. Standard scrabble letter values will apply, this might have to be adapted for non UK based runs.

5. The standard letter values are as follows:
A=1 B=3 C=3 D=2 E=1 F=4 G=2 H=4 I=1 J=8 K=5 L=1 M=3
N=1 O=1 P=3 Q=10 R=1 S=1 T=1 U=1 V=4 W=4 X=8 Y=4 Z=10

6. The final second of your time will adjust the letter values as follows:
0 = Letter score only
1 = Double letter score (1st letter only)
2 = Triple letter score (1st letter only)
3 = Double letter score (1st & 3rd letter)
4 = Triple letter score (1st & 5th letter)
5 = Double word score
6 = Double letter (1st letter) and Double word
7 = Triple letter (1st letter) and Double word
8 = Triple word
9 = Double letter (1st letter) and Triple word

7. The number of players will be split in half at the end of each round, with the top half progressing to the next round.
In the event of players being tied at the split, your next highest score will be taken into account.

I will start calculating the scores based on runs already made this month.
So my run at Littlehampton Prom in 19:53 scores me 30 points
Going Underground ran the same course in 34:24 so scores 32 points
One day I shall return!

Parkrun Zary would only be classed as Zary.
I'm sure I heard somewhere that Z is only worth 1 point in Polish Scrabble, so...

Z in the case of Zary would still count as 10 points.
However, the Danish æ, as in Fælledparken, has no real English equivalent, so would get the Danish score for this letter of 4 points.

2. The Raven - Bournemouth (9) = 63pts
3. Going Underground - Bedfont Lakes (8) = 66pts
4. Das - Brockenhurst (7) = 58pts
5. Soup Dragon - Lancing Beach Green (6) = 58pts
6. Tractakid - Linford Wood (8) = 54pts

At this stage we will all progress to round two unless there are two new runners on 27th April.
If there are no new runners next week the 16th spot will be filled by the next runner with the most recent run.
If two runners are tied on this then the one with the higher scrabble score will progress to the round of 16.
One day I shall return!
