Tube MediaWiki

OK, we've touched on this a few times in the past and I was wondering what everyone thought of the idea.

You may have heard of MediaWiki, a piece of software which allows you to run a "Wiki" on any subject you like. In the past people have often moaned that the main website isn't updated often enough and have suggested that some such system was set up.

I can easily set one up through one of my other web domains and I was wondering if there was any demand for setting one up for Tube Challenging and what the content would comprise.

Speak!

Interesting,

I was just thinking about making a small web thing to run off my own domain, probably located at http://www.jonnylyon.net/tubechallenge which could be linked to from here and would basically just have the times that had been achieved in the alternative challenges. Rather like the Top Times stickies that we have here.

If a Wiki could be set up at tubechallenge.com, then this would suit the task much better.

I'm in favour :D

Well, the Wiki can't be set up through the tubechallenge.com domain because I would have to do it manually and would tbe beyond the scope of my brain.

However, at my OTHER domain, which is run by Dreamhost, I have a one-click install MediaWiki thingy which will do it all for me.

I suppose I could purchase a suitable domain name through DH for a few dollars more ...

ah ok,

could you perhaps set up a page which automatically redirects to wherever you would have to host it then?

I don't think its fair to ask you to pay more money for it, and it's hardly worth getting donations either, so you might as well put it on your other domain.

If clara.net give you full control over the DNS for tubechallenge.com, you ought to be able to point wiki.tubechallenge.com at your Dreamhost account while still leaving the rest of tubechallenge.com where it is, and that way you can get the benefit of a dedicated domain name without the extra expense (assuming Dreamhost don't hit you with silly fees for handling a domain that you already own).

That's quite a few 'if's though. Feel free to ignore me if that sounds like too much hassle (or give me a shout if you want more pointers - I've done this sort of thing quite a lot before, although a lot of it will depend on how Dreamhost have their stuff set up).

But anyway. I'd say a wiki would be a great idea, for maintaining record charts and a challenge calendar at least (anything else, such as route tips and exit numbers, would no doubt hinge on people's willingness to share their trade secrets...)

Well I'm sure we don't need to worry too much about the actual URL in the location bar.

So long as we KNOW where it is and bookmark it, we're fine.

Yes I would be in favour of this and if Neil says it would cost aa few quid more then I am sure that those that are interested wont mind chipping in with a couple of quid donation or whatever.... :D

Jonny, the link you set up to your site doesn't seem to work :?:

Latest news: in order to make this work I need PHP5 on my domain.

I believe I can arrange that easily enough. Bloody computers ...

OK, so far as I can see, it all works!

Now, before anyone even thinks about editing it, it would be nice if we could agree on some kind of structure so it all looks nice.

I'm not taking control here - I'm simply saying that I don't want random unformatted rubbish put on there for the sake of it. It would be nice if a "house-style" was adopted.

Suggestions?

Sorry it's not actually there, i was just posting the URL that I was proposing to put that thingy up at.

So far Ive got all the pages made, but havent put any of the times on. If you want me to finish it off I will do -- it'll only take 10 minutes -- but as I say if you don't like it afterwards I won't bother with it.

EDIT: I'm doing it anyway until someone objects :)

I agree 100% and look forward to seeing the finished product :)
