Geoff i think that you will agree that I was hardly caught in the "hype and excitement", yet i still would like to see the Zone 1 Challenge happen twice a year.

Hi guys, great to meet you all on Friday. Just a quick post as I've only got a minute. I'll email/post details of my route asap.

I can almost walk again though :)

Just a small suggestion to vary the format: fix the *finishing* station. People synchronise watches when they meet, and start wherever they like at a fixed time, e.g. 1pm, even if there is no train in the platform at that time. That way, the participants are really racing each other to get to the finishing station, so it will be very visual who has won.

I agree that we shouldn't do this too much though, let's give it till September at least.

Ric I quite like that suggestion, we should look into that! I thought my suggestion was quite good...:

Start at the pub. Start the stopwatch.
Down your pint.
Do all of Zone 1.
Return to Pub.
Down a second pint.
Stop the clock.

i *like* that suggestion.

e.g Meet at Oxford at midday, see who's turned up, register everyone as per Friday, etc..

Somone call up the talking clock, and we all synchronise watches, or sync to Rugby time clock, etc..

Pick a random station which is the FINISHING station.

Everyone then pootles off, and starts at any station of their choice after 1pm - big element of trust here.

People then turn up at the finish station 3 hours-ish later in a very visible fashion. Love it!

That might even tempt me to agree to doing that in September!

All in favour say 'aye' !

That would be uber-competitive and great fun, but the element of trust here is enormous!

In fact, it's bigger than that - it's large!!

Great idea though: AYE!

Edit: Apologies for the misuse of "uber (sans ummlaut)".

AYE! Lets do either very early in September or very late in September. Purely for selfish reasons. Im on residential in Oxford mid September so maybe i should drop the Circus part and start there instead!

Of course, it should be an annual event! For starters - I don't want our "2005 Zone 1 Champion" title diluted in any way... :D

There's always one who has reservations about an idea ...

Fixed finishing station - surely this is the same as a fixed start station in principle as you simple plan your route STARTING there and then reverse it!

That adds no extra edge to it at all. And if you've got a circular route, it's even less challenging.

Just a thought. But I still think September could be good (well it WAS my idea :D)

I agree with the guru. It's better to have a fixed starting station.
Of course, we could be completely ridiculous and fix the starting and finishing stations.
