Alternative Challenge Idea - Two Circles

Post by hopeful traveller »

I haven’t looked into the feasibility of this, so laugh away:

Visit every station within (and including) the two circles of the Circle Line and the Overground “circle” (Clapham Junction-Willesden Junction-Highbury&Islington-Surrey Quays).
1 FNC Completion (PB: 17:18:18 with G Bryant, A Chilcraft, I MacNaughton)
4 Zone Ones (PB: 03:00:35 with G Bryant)
15 R15s (PB: 01:55:48 with T Cooling and R Jackson)
11 All Lines (PB: 00:44:03)

Any reason why you mention the circle line "bottle"? Every station within that is also within the outer circle. Unless you mean to EXCLUDE those stations within the bottle, making this the "donut" challenge? Presumably this includes Overground as well as Underground stations - does it include NR and/or DLR stations as well?

But whatever it is, it sounds like a fun challenge. Somewhere between a Z1 and Z1&2 in size, with a bit of a twist.

Doughnut challenge… I like that name!

Yes, I mean excluding stations inside the bottle. I think it should be TFL modes, so DLR and obviously Overground. I think there’s only 1 standalone DLR station in that lot though.

I like it!

Does this include stations on the inner and outer circle?

What about Battersea park?

If you excluded the stations on the loops, there is the harder version of not being allowed to use either circle during the challenge.

Separately, while we are clarifying rules, if the challenge was to include stations on the loop, at interchange stations with other lines, presumably any line would count as a visit?

I think it would include stations on the two circles and therefore a visit by any of the valid lines is acceptable.

Would not include Battersea Park, as I envisage this being not an all-day challenge and more of an Olympics-eligible one.

Are you considering banning any travel within the doughnut, or would it still be permitted to take the Vic from Kings Cross to Victoria or Crossrail (hah, as if it'll be open) across town?

That is the point - the "hole" is banned!

You visit Battersea park via national rail?

What is the ruling on Edgware Road and Marylebone at present re the bottle challenge?

I'm presuming that it is the definition of the circle as on the map. By that I mean that using the Bakerloo or Northern line platforms at Embankment would be fine, despite them physically being located inside the circle line.

The Bottle challenge includes these two stations and always has done.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Cheers Tangy.

With that in mind, I will say that Edgware Road and Marylebone are not "must visit" stations, but are not "banned" either.

Here's a potential possible route:

Holland Park - Notting Hill Gate - Bayswater - South Kensington - West Brompton - Imperial Wharf - Shepherd's Bush (LO) - Shepherd's Bush (Cen) - White City - Wood Lane - Euston Square - Euston - Belsize Park - Camden Town - Camden Road - Finchley Road & Frognal - Finchley Road - West Hampstead (Jub) - West Hampstead (LO) - Willesden Junction - Kilburn High Road - Queen's Park - Baker Street - Swiss Cottage - South Hampstead - Euston - Moorgate - King's Cross St Pancras - Highbury & Islington - Caledonian Road & Barnsbury - Clapham Junction (via ELL) - Vauxhall - Pimlico - Stockwell - Waterloo - Elephant & Castle (via Bak) - London Bridge - Bermondsey - Westminster - Sloane Square - Aldgate/Aldgate East (or vice versa) - Liverpool Street.

Here's a very basic cannibalisation of the map which may assist you in my visualisation of the challenge:

Aren't White City and Wood Lane 'banned' stations?

Also can I put my pedantic hat on.

If the intention is to visit every station in the doughnut wouldn't this also apply to the mainline stations of King's Cross and St. Pancras. As I am fond of telling people on a regular basis the Underground Station is called King's Cross St. Pancras, but there are two separate buildings for the mainline stations; King's Cross AND St. Pancras

So wouldn't this follow the same rule as Hammersmith, Paddington and Edgware Road both have to be visited for if to count
