By order of the Peaky Blinders….

Welcome to the Birmingham Random 15. Starting at Birmingham New Street, you will visit 15 randomly selected National Rail stations in the West Midlands, in an area bordered by the following stations: Rugeley Trent Valley, Lichfield Trent Valley, Coventry, Leamington Spa, Stratford-upon-Avon, Redditch, Worcester and Wolverhampton.
For stations included see West Midlands rail map https://drive.google.com/open?id=1YWFD2 ... knhLSFsLHN

When: 11:00 Saturday 22nd February.
Where: Birmingham New Street, underneath the departure boards next to the ticket office
Duration: 11:00-19:00

You will need to purchase a Daytripper + ticket (actually two tickets) on arrival at Birmingham New Street. Any additional tickets required will be advised with the selected stations.

Randomly selected stations will be posted on the forum at 09:00, giving you 2 hours to plan your route.

Closures affecting the challenge: None. This is a football match day, so Bordesley will have an enhanced football service as shown in the timetables.

You can only transfer between stations on foot or by scheduled public transport but not private transport such as car, taxi, cycle, motorbike etc.

The start of the challenge will begin at 11:00 and finish when you set foot on the platform at your final station. There is a time limit for this challenge of 8 hours. If you cannot visit all 15 stations in this time, then record your time for the number of stations that you have visited.

You must submit a route plan on the supplied log sheet, together with arrival times at each of the 15 stations and a timed photo of each station, showing clearly the station name. You do not need to do this for your first station, if you depart from Birmingham New Street.

We start at Birmingham New Street but if you choose to catch your first train from another station ie Moor Street or Snow Hill, you can do so but you will still need to visit New Street by train during your route.

A station visit is defined as arriving or departing by train. Challengers are not required to get off the train but can do so if they wish to change. If a station is temporarily closed for any reason e.g. security alert, engineering works etc, then a "pass through" of the station is accepted. If a station is shown as a request stop in the timetable but no one requests that stop then a pass through of the station is accepted.

If you arrive at your 15th station on foot or by bus or tram, you must keep your stopwatch running until you reach your next station (in any direction) by train.

Once you have completed the Random 15 challenge then please head to the evening meet up point. This is at Manzil’s Restaurant, 112 Digbeth, B5 6DT. If you are heading straight home, please submit a photograph of your completed log sheet by e-mail to the Organiser, within one hour of finishing.

At the meet up point, the routes will be checked and the Organiser will announce the results.

I'm not going to be there, but nasty hypotheticals here - what if your last station is arrived at by foot and then your next station call is a request stop - do you have to get off and reboard the next service for a time to count, which isn't that I bad I suppose at the end, count to the next served station or do you have to keep a watch out for the platform and stop it as you go past?

I would amend this to:

"If a station is shown as a request stop in the timetable and the train is booked to call but no one requests that stop then a pass through of the station is accepted".

This would eliminate trains such as the 1754 ex Stratford which is non stop Henley to Whitlock's End, thus are not booked to call at the request stops.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

In this unlikely case, there is no need to request stop the train. Just stop your watch when you are passing the platform, assuming the request stop is shown in the timetable.

My rule is sufficient. Request stops only exist on the Stratford-upon-Avon line and are shown clearly in the timetable. Your 17:54 example is a fast train and does not have request stops, so cannot be used to visit, say Wood End.

Good luck everyone - hope the rain doesn't cause any problems!

Will you be putting the list of stations up on the forum on Saturday morning? Would be fun to do the challenge virtually, especially as Dave has done all the work with maps and timetables.

a timed photo of each station, showing clearly the station name. You do not need to do this for your first station, if you depart from Birmingham New Street.
Please clarify. Intending to time using phone and take photos from phone. Cannot take photo of phone from phone. What are you expecting from "timed photo"? If time permits could selfie station sign and DMI, but not necessarily going.to be possible.
