Random 15 Championship 2018/19: Round 2

Post by tangy »

**Sorry for the late posting of this event, been very hectic with work commitments and personal issues**

Welcome to the 2014/15 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone or network e.g. DLR onto the challenge. So are you ready to take on the Random 15 championship?

If anyone is not familiar with the standard rules (or scoring) for Random 15 challenges, they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm (for regulars this is the same rules you are already well versed with).

So let us announce the details for round 2.

When: Saturday 17th November 2018, 12:30 GMT start.
Pre challenge meet up: Paddington (Praed Street). Meet in ticket hall above the Circle/District platforms accessed directly from Praed Street itself (opposite the Hilton Hotel).
Post challenge meet up: The Bricklayers Arms, 31 Gresse Street W1T 1QS (off TCR, the road)
Variant: This the "champion's twist" round (held back from round 1). The twist being that the 15 stations to be visited will be split into two envelopes (8 in the first and 7 in the other). Envelope 1 will contain a mix of LU and DLR stations whilst envelope 2 will contain a mix of NR (including any sub brands such as Overground and Crossrail) stations. All stations generated will be from zones 1 to 3.
Time limit: 6 hours

Extra rules for "two envelope" twists:
--Please note that ALL stations contained in envelope one MUST be visited BEFORE progressing onto envelope two.
--At your 8th station (i.e. the last station to visit in envelope one) you may open envelope two as soon as the train doors open, you do NOT need to alight the train (though you may do so if you wish).
--In addition your 8th station must only be arrived at by train- in order for the "transfer" between envelopes one and two to take place, as described above.
--Your stopwatch must continue counting between envelopes one and two and stopped as usual at your 15th station.

Engineering works:
--Crossrail: Liverpool Street- Shenfield (also affects long distance Greater Anglia services)
--DLR: Stratford International- Canning Town

--c2c: No trains to Liverpool Street via Stratford. All c2c trains will run to/from Fenchurch Street.
--Greater Anglia (Eastern): No trains to/from Liverpool Street. Trains terminate outwith the London area.
--Greater Anglia (West): No trains via Tottenham Hale, diversions via Seven Sisters. Temple Mills line closed.
--London Overground: Romford- Upminster closed.
--Southern: Services reduced to/from London Victoria (diversions to London Bridge).

As this round contains National Rail stations, a standard Tube Map will not be sufficient for you to plan your challenge. You are advised to bring a copy of the London Connections map with you as this shows all rail services in Greater London. You can usually get copies at most National rail stations (may need to ask the ticket clerk if they are not on display).

Please can everyone who is coming notify me of your attendance as too many "turn up on the day" challengers can cause problems with lack of envelopes. Thanks.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Just a thought though - wouldn't the subway underneath the Paddington hotel (i.e. at the bottom of the main steps from the Paddington NR concourse) be a better meeting place, as it would be easier to access the Bakerloo from there if anybody wanted to? Or is it too busy there?

Obviously it depends on the stations, but I think it should be enough most of the time. You have to draw a line somewhere and six hours seems long enough for a challenge. Even now, it may well be nearly 8pm before people get back to the pub depending on where they finish.

In fact it might be better if we started a bit earlier at 1200 which would still give time for people to parkrun/breakfast before if desired?

Would rather stick with the 1230 start please as this will be after no sleep Friday night with the 24 hours on the tube full network so would appreciate a little time to see where / if we get this finished before parkrun + need to get back to Feltham Sat AM for change of clothes / dump the games we would have been taking around on Friday...

Can I clarify my understanding of the rules?

It's possible that, for example, Liverpool Street (LU) will be in the first envelope and Liverpool Street (NR) will be in the second envelope, so you'll have to go back. In that case, the first time around you must arrive or depart from Liverpool Street on an Underground train (Central, H&C, Met or Circle) and the second time you must arrive or depart on a NR service (inc. Overground and TfL Rail)

For the NR stations, do you have to be on a service that stops at that station, or are fast trains that pass through allowed?

If you can't complete within the 6 hour time limit, are you supposed to log your time at the last station before your time is up? So that tangy can rank competitors on who completed 14 stations fastest, for instance.

To be honest, if I'm bored/tired around the time of the usual 4 hour time limit, I might just pack it in there, head to the pub and claim for however many stations I've managed.
