Hello and welcome to the 2017/18 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 Challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map and/or London Connections Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone/s or network/s e.g. DLR, National Rail onto the challenge and these are known as "twist" rounds.

The rules of the Random 15 Challenge are unchanged from last season but if anyone is not familiar with these (or how the scoring works), they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

The 2017/18 season is at the half way mark, round 3 So here is the vital details for you:

When: Saturday 20th January 2018 12:30 UK local time.
Pre-Challenge meet up point: Farringdon, please meet in or by the entrance of the original "Tube" ticket hall.
Post challenge meet up point: The Bricklayers Arms pub, Gresse Street (off TCR, the road).
Variant: As is now traditional for round 3, it is the National Rail round. Therefore NR stations in zones 1 and 2 will be added into the mix together with the usual pool of Underground stations.
Time limit for completing: As this is including NR stations, the time limit to complete is 6 hours.

Closures affecting the challenge
--Circle/H&C: No service Baker Street- High Street Ken/Hammersmith.
--District (Wimbleware): No service Edgware Road- High Street Ken.

The following National Rail routes are disrupted:
--South Eastern: London Bridge and approach tracks closed. Therefore, no trains at Cannon Street, Charing Cross or Waterloo East nor between London Bridge and Charlton via Greenwich or Lewisham via New Cross. Southern trains at London Bridge terminal platforms unaffected.

As it this is a National Rail round, a standard Tube Map will NOT be sufficient for you to plan your challenge. It is advised to bring a copy of the "London Connections" map with you on the day. This map shows ALL rail routes in London and is readily available in leaflet form at most NR stations in London and the Home Counties- current edition has a dark blue cover. I will have a few copies with me on the day.

All welcome, who will be riding high or be in the cess this time?

Tangy
The BERC.

The TfL track closures PDF http://content.tfl.gov.uk/track-closures.pdf shows a closure Baker Street - Hammersmith / High Street Ken on the subsurface lines

It looks like the TfL Rail closure is only on the Sunday. Surprised they bother running a shuttle just from Liverpool Street to Stratford when the Central line already covers that route.

Peckham is a good all-weather course I am led to believe.

Crossrail is operating Liverpool Street- Chadwell Heath trains on Saturday (only on Sunday is it just a shuttle between Liverpool Street and Stratford). c2c will also be operating their timetabled trains through Stratford on Saturday.

When I checked the TfL website status update for Saturday 20th yesterday when I made the post, the map graphic showed no engineering works- not even the above Crossrail closure. It is now showing the District and H&C closures, but Circle operating as normal!

I will amend the initial post to reflect this..

Am I right in thinking that for this challenge:

Any stations where it is necessary to pass through barriers to get from an Underground station to a NR station count as separate stations (Paddington, Victoria, Ealing Broadway etc)?

Any stations where it is possible to change from NR to Underground or vice versa without passing through barriers (mostly Underground stations) count as one station and can be visited by either mode?

Yes to both. The full list of stations where there are two or more with the same name - taking into account stations which are closed - is:

- Paddington (NR), Paddington (Bakerloo). Paddington H&C is closed.
- Edgware Road (Bakerloo). Edgware Road Circle is closed.
- Marylebone (NR), Marylebone (LU).
- Charing Cross (LU). Charing Cross NR is closed.
- Waterloo (NR), Waterloo (LU).
- Elephant and Castle (NR), Elephant and Castle (LU).
- Shepherd's Bush (LO), Shepherd's Bush (LU).
- Liverpool Street (NR), Liverpool Street (LU).
- Bethnal Green (NR), Bethnal Green (LU).
- Hammersmith (Piccadilly). Hammersmith H&C is closed.
- King's Cross St. Pancras, King's Cross (NR), St Pancras International (NR).
- Cannon Street (LU). Cannon Street NR is closed.
- Blackfriars (NR), Blackfriars (LU).
- Victoria (NR), Victoria (LU).
- West Hampstead Thameslink, West Hampstead (LO), West Hampstead (LU).
- London Bridge (NR), London Bridge (LU).
- Euston (NR/LO), Euston (LU).
- Finsbury Park (NR), Finsbury Park (LU).
- Vauxhall (NR), Vauxhall (LU).
- Brixton (NR), Brixton (LU).

I believe all other stations are fairly clear - if it's a different name, then it's a different station? Ealing Broadway isn't in Z1-2, but they're all behind the same barriers there anyway.

Would The Kentish Drovers be a good suggestion for Spoons?

To clarify, here is a list of what stations are to be included in the challenge:

--All LU stations in zones 1-2. (except those closed for engineering work)
--All Overground stations in zones 1-2.
--NR Stations counted as separate from the above: All London Terminals, Battersea Park, Bethnal Green, Brixton, Cambridge Heath, Clapton, City Thameslink, Deptford, Drayton Park, East Dulwich, Elephant & Castle, Essex Road, Finsbury Park, Greenwich, Hackney Downs, Herne Hill, Lewisham, Limehouse, Loughborough Junction, North Dulwich, Nunhead, Putney, Queenstown Road, Rectory Road, South Bermondsey, St. Johns, Stoke Newington, Vauxhall, Waterloo East, Wandsworth Town, West Hampstead Thameslink.

Out of the above Cannon Street (NR), Charing Cross (NR), Waterloo East, St Johns, Deptford and Greenwich are closed for engineering works. Also note that New Cross can only be visited by East London Line, Lewisham by trains to/from Victoria and London Bridge by terminating Southern trains.

The golden rule is that if you need to exit one set of ticket barriers then enter another set of ticket barriers to transfer to the other network then it is classed as separate. At stations where one can interchange between two different networks without passing through any ticket barriers then it is counted as one station can be visited by any of the above networks included in this challenge.

Examples include: Farringdon, Highbury & Islington, Kensington Olympia, New Cross, West Brompton, Whitechapel to name a few.

Tangy/Kevin,

Out of interest, when was Random 15 invented and by whom?

The first R15 was held the evening before the 2007 Zone 1 day.
