Random 15 Championship 2016/17: Round 1

Post by tangy »

Hello and welcome to the 2016/17 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map and/or London Connections Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone/s or network/s e.g. DLR, National Rail onto the challenge and these are known as "twist" rounds.

The rules of the Random 15 Challenge are unchanged from last season but if anyone is not familiar with these (or how the scoring works), they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

The new 2016/17 season starts, obviously, with round 1. So here is the vital details for you:

When: Saturday 10th September 12:30 UK local time.
Pre-Challenge meet up point: Temple Station street side of the ticket barriers
Post challenge meet up point: The Bricklayers Arms pub, Gresse Street (off TCR, the road).
Variant: Traditionally, round one has always been a twist round, however the twist is chosen by last yer's champion. Therefore Going Underground has given us the following:
The twist will be "ABC easy as 1,2,3"

LU stations only Z1-2 but you must visit in the order of the total words in the drawn stations (Including the starting station if this has more then one word....) So for example looking at the set of stations used in round 4 in last years championship...

"Highbury & Islington
--Great Portland Street
--St. Paul's
--Canada Water
--Queen's Park
--Holborn
--Bayswater
--Pimlico
--Swiss Cottage
--Paddington (Bak/Dist)
--Edgware Road (Circle)
--Westbourne Park
--Marble Arch
--Kennington
--Vauxhall (LU)"

You would have to visit first (in any order)
Holborn
Bayswater
Pimlico
Paddington
Kennington
Vauxhall

Then secondly (in any order)
St Paul's
Canada Water
Green Park
Swiss Cottage
Edgware Road
Westbourne Park
Marble Arch

Then thirdly (in any order)
Highbury & Islington
Great Portland Street

As an example if you have passed through Great Portland Street and Edgware Road on the way to and before you have visited Bayswater then they still need to be visited in 2 and 3 word station order.....
Hope that is clear enough for you to understand. Stations with hyphenated spelling such as Bromley-by-Bow count as three separate words, any words in brackets saying which network or what line that station is on can be ignored such as the example above with Edgware Road (Circle).

Line and Station closures affecting the challenge: Apart from Lambeth North, all LU stations in zones 1 and 2 are scheduled to be open and with a good service. However bear in mind the following which could affect your out of station interchanges:

DLR: No service Tower/Bank- Poplar/Canary Wharf.
Northern: No service Archway- Mill Hill East/High Barnet.

Overground- GOBLIN: Closed throughout
Overground- West London: No service on Overground or Southern between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction/Watford Junction (and beyond)
Overground- West Anglia: No service between Liverpool Street and Chingford/Enfield Town via Seven Sisters. Greater Anglia trains will be diverted via Lea Bridge to/from Tottenham Hale.
South West Trains: No trains Barnes- Twickenham via Richmond. Diversions via Hounslow loop.

Lambeth North: Station closed for lift refurbishment (pass through accepted)
London Bridge (NR): Trains to/from Cannon Street unable to stop at London Bridge- trains to/from Charing Cross are now stopping at London Bridge again. Still no Thameslink service between London Bridge and Blackfriars however.

This is fresh season, so everyone starts again with a score of zero. Everyone welcome.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

This is a really good idea for a champions twist! I won't be able to make it, though, unfortunately.

I might have to come out of hibernation for this one. My muscle imbalance is at the stage where I feel I can run without feeling complete garbage the day after :D

Well, with a one word first station at least there'll be a conventional start!

Very unlikely I'll be there as my ankle's playing up quite badly at the moment. However I have emailed Chris and David the details in case they want to join in (if they tell me they do, I will add them to the list).

But yes, it does sound like an interesting challenge.

What will the time limit be? Depending on the stations, 4 hours may not be enough.

Glad to hear that the "twist" has been met with approval, it's quite tricky to come up with new ones that are practical now....!

By those rules, it would have to be a four or more word pub!

Or does this mean if King's Cross St Pancras comes out, we finish all the other stations, go to The Bricklayers Arms (three words), hand in our times to Tangy, play several rounds of darts with drinks, then run off to King's Cross St Pancras and hit stop on our watches?

I've had a few plays with the generator, and one thing's stood out to me:

This could well be the most strategic R15 we've ever done...
