Random 15 Championship 2015/16: Round 1

Post by tangy »

Welcome to the 2015/16 Random 15 Championship. I will continue to be your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map and/or London Connections Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone/s or network/s e.g. DLR, National Rail onto the challenge and these are known as "twist" rounds.

If anyone is not familiar with the standard rules (or scoring) for Random 15 challenges, they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm (for regulars the rules are the same as last year).

So let us announce the details for round 1.

When: Saturday 5th September at 12:00 noon (NOTE: earlier time)
Pre challenge meet up point: Clapham Junction, Grant Road entrance (NOTE: If arriving by train Grant Road is clearly signed from the subway linking all the platforms at the centre of each platform, there is NO access to Grant Road from the footbridge).
Post challenge meet up: The Bricklayers Arms, Gresse Street (off TCR, the road).

The challenge: The opening round of the season is a "twist" round and has been chosen (with agreement with myself) by last years' champion Andrew Chilcraft.

The challenge will be to visit 15 randomly generated/drawn stations that will be: South of the Thames, in Zones 1-4 and are on the Underground, DLR or National Rail (includes Overground) networks. Due to the inclusion of National Rail operators, you will need a London Connections map (it will be helpful if you had your own copy, but I will have a limited amount on the day).

In addition to the usual Random 15 rules, in this challenge although all the stations will be south of the Thames, you can venture north of the Thames if you so wish (otherwise it would make stations like Woolwich Arsenal DLR and North Greenwich impossible to visit). Blackfriars NR will be included as it has an entrance on the south bank (as well as on the north side).

Closures affecting the challenge:
--District/Wimbleware: Earl's Court- Wimbledon
--East London: South of New Cross Gate
--Tramlink: Wimbledon- Dundonald Road
--Thameslink: No trains Blackfriars- East Croydon via London Bridge (all trains using a diversion route)
--South Eastern: Trains to/from Charing Cross do NOT call London Bridge
--South Eastern: No trains Plumstead- Slade Green
--Southern: No local trains via Honor Oak Park- limited fast services between Norwood Junction and London Bridge (trains via South Bermondsey will still operate).

These are only the closures that directly affect the challenge, there may be further works going in other areas. Please check.

I have to do some swotting up, and not only on my trains. Also, St. Margaret's (London) better be OUT of the draw as it is undebatably north of the Thames.

It could certainly be a fun one.

If the draw produces several far flung NR stations on different lines it could take ages. I'm sure there are a lot of stations with infrequent services.

From RailRiders Group, 4-5 of us will be coming. There will be Myself (Josh), Iwan and 2-3 others from our team of 8. (I only told them today that we are going for definite so they are still deciding but there will be at least 2 others).

Here is our website showing our archive of challenges since we started in February 2014: http://railriderstubechallenge.webs.com/

Well if you go due North from St Margarets, you reach the Thames! Arguably it is both North and South of the Thames. :D

Indeed - one of the reasons I'm miffed at not being able to make this one is that I suspect everyone will have to look the stations up at the start, rather than just me! (Last time I think most people had managed two stations before I'd folded the map up!)
