Alphabet on a line

Post by A Challenge »

How about starting a challenge like this: Doing all the station of a line in Alphabetical order. For example for the Victoria Line:

Blackhorse Road
Brixton
Euston
Finsbury Park
Green Park
Highbury and Islington
Kings Cross St Pancras
Oxford Circus
Pimlico
Stockwell
Seven Sisters
Tottenham Hale
Victoria
Vauxhall
Warren Street
Walthamstow Central

Totaling: 7 Cross Platform Interchanges and 7 Same-train stations between Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow Central (I think)

Winner of Gumbleweeds V, VI + XI, Nimbleweeds I, III - IX + XIV and (joint with GuyBarry) winner of Timesnap

And most importantly, Former leader of Tumbleweed, and first person to 250,000

We did something similar in Sydney with the alphabet. We all met up at Central (the main station in Sydney) and the idea was to travel on 20 stations in alphabetical order (so 21 trains). I did the challenge a couple of times before. If you look at the map below, the challenge was necessarily to go to one "A" station then a "B" station, but actually to do the 20 stations as they appear on the list at the bottom of the map

http://www.sydneytrains.info/stations/p ... an_map.pdf

One challenge I did started at Central (which for the start, doesn't count) then first train to Ashfield, then to Burwood, Central, Circular Quay, Domestic, Green Square, Kingsgrove, Mascot, International, etc...

I do like that idea, it would be pretty interesting spending a few hours on the same line and you could indeed with a line like the Victoria line do that. I'd be up for something like that :) to get my feet wet in doing some tube challenges while I'm in the UK :)

Rather than up down would be more interesting on a line with more than one branch, I am sure someone with time on their hands could alphabetically list the others

In order of least interesting to most interesting at first glance:

- Waterloo and City (this challenge a few of us have done by complete accident)
- Victoria (only interchanges that could possibly interest anyone are H&I and Stockwell, this is incredibly dull up and down work)
- Bakerloo (I predict much waiting at Queen's Park)
- Jubilee (perhaps some Met gambits could come into this, or Central gambits, but overall so boring)
- Hammersmith and City (a couple more interesting gambits could come along here)
- Metropolitan (this would probably be just a lot of very, very long rides on S Stocks)
- Central (the western end hardly counts as branches, the eastern end, perhaps something)
- Piccadilly (maybe some buses could come into play, I don't have the order of stations in front of me)
- Northern (this definitely has potential!)
- District (a lot of gambits here)
All London buses: 23 hours 25 minutes (with Adham, David, Josh and Tangy)
Holds some alternative challenge records. Not sure which ones.
20½ Random 15 challenges: 01:58:48 best

I did the Victoria line because it is the shortest proper line (commuters do the Waterloo and City everyday) and it was just an example.

Metropolitan:

Aldgate
Amersham
Baker Street
Barbican
Chalfont & Latimer
Chesham
Chorleywood
Croxley
Eastcote
Euston Square
Farringdon
Finchley Road
Great Portland Street
Harrow-on-the-Hill
Hillingdon
Ickenham
King's Cross St. Pancras
Liverpool Street
Moorgate
Moor Park
North Harrow
Northwick Park
Northwood
Northwood Hills
Pinner
Preston Road
Rayners Lane
Rickmansworth
Ruislip
Ruislip Manor
Uxbridge
Watford
Wembley Park
West Harrow

Small bits and pieces here. Amersham should be reached by Chilterns, so can Chalfont. Eastcote was no problem. As it seemed, q lot of rides on S Stocks...

How about doing the DLR in alphabet order? Might be compact enough to work?

And the Circle line, which I think could be an interesting one.

Of course the Circle would be most interesting!

RE: DLR

I see your point, and I take this challenge to another level. Relax the "arrive/depart by train" rule in the challenge and change it to take a photo of a platform sign in the station/station sign outside the station. Nothing here will suffer apart from Royal Albert  Royal Victoria  Shadwell as the DLR is so branchy, and you get a real challenge!

The Overground would take longer than a day, I fear, and Battersea Park would have to be dropped as the first train through Acton Central is at about 6am, not enough time to get to the 6:18am at Battersea Park after that, certainly not fit Anerley and Barking in.

And then there's the Euston controversy - is it London Euston or Euston?

Someone else can do the Circle line.
