R15 Twist Ideas

Post by hopeful traveller »

I was on the Met Line and thought of these...
  • "Far Away" Similar to scrxisi's excellent "on train start" idea, except that the stations are all (for example) zones 1-2 and the starting station is somewhere with options, like Rayners Lane.
  • Tracking: Tangy should love this one: go over a certain piece of track.
  • Fixed station list: Someone who doesn't take part in the round should "fix" the station list - i.e. remove the "Random" from "Random 15".
  • Lovebirds: Where two lines run side-by-side above ground (Dis/Pic or Jub/Met), any stations such as Willesden Green or Ravenscourt Park must be visited by, using Willesden Green as an example, Jubilee and passed through on the Met line.
1 FNC Completion (PB: 17:18:18 with G Bryant, A Chilcraft, I MacNaughton)
4 Zone Ones (PB: 03:00:35 with G Bryant)
15 R15s (PB: 01:55:48 with T Cooling and R Jackson)
11 All Lines (PB: 00:44:03)

Other ideas:

"Every Line" - if an interchange station appears on the list it must be visited on every line that passes through it (e.g. Stockwell by Victoria and Northern). KCSP would be trouble! Also spinoffs (evil ones) include:
"Every Line, Every Direction" - using the Stockwell example the station must be visited by Victoria North and South and Northern North and South.
"Every Line (Tube and Friends)" - using the example of Stratford, the station would have to be visited by DLR through both lines, Overground, Central and Jubilee.

"Landmarks" - instead of 15 stations you are given 15 landmarks/places, and you have to visit the closest station to the landmark (e.g. if given Tate Britain you must visit Pimlico, London Zoo Camden Town etc.) Also comes in "Tube and Friends" version

"Single Visit" - instead of arrive and/or depart by LU train, you can only do one of the two (EITHER arrive OR depart by LU train). Companion is of course
"Double Visit" - arrive AND depart by LU train. INCLUDING THE STARTING AND FINISHING STATIONS!

"Forced Alternative" - if the station has an interchange with non-LU services on the Oyster Rail and Services Map you must visit it by non-LU services (e.g. Highbury and Islington by Overground, Elephant and Castle by NR, Bank by DLR)

"No Same Carriage" - this one is bound to make you tired by the end! For each journey between two stations you must change carriage. If you run out of carriages you have to wait for the next train. For example travelling on a D Stock train (6 carriages) from Embankment to Aldgate East when you hit Tower Hill you have run out of carriages and have to wait for the next train.

"Seven, One, Seven" - you are given fourteen stations in one envelope and one in the other. You must visit seven of the fourteen, then open the other envelope and visit the one, then deal with the other seven.

"Zone Straddlers" - Half a bonus point for every station you visit that straddles two zones. These stations are Archway, Bounds Green, Bromley-by-Bow, Clapham South, Earls Court, East Ham, East Putney, Elephant and Castle, Hampstead, Hatton Cross, Hendon Central, Kew Gardens, Leytonstone, Manor House, Moor Park, North Acton, North Greenwich, Notting Hill Gate, South Wimbledon, Turnham Green, Vauxhall, Willesden Green, Willesden Junction. Four of these straddle Zones 1 and 2 - and will be picked up on fast. The others are on the edge of Zone 2 or further out, and hence encourage you to trek out a bit for more points (take a risk!)

And something else entirely...

"Photo Competition" - Everyone takes a photo of something interesting they see on the way. Best photo (comparison and voting at meet-up) wins. If the event coincides with Steam on the Met (or something like that) there might not be that much variety though.
All London buses: 23 hours 25 minutes (with Adham, David, Josh and Tangy)
Holds some alternative challenge records. Not sure which ones.
20½ Random 15 challenges: 01:58:48 best

Landmarks sounds fun but would either lead to arguments over which station is closest or if it's clear cut would have the same result as visiting so many stations. Perhaps taking a photo of each landmark?

By landmark I mean a famous place - doesn't have to be impressive architecture. Museum of London could be a lot of fun in your version as St. Paul's, Barbican and Moorgate are all within easy walking distance - many different routes! I think your version is better, frankly.

"Landmarks" spell instant trouble from the point of view of:
Charing Cross is the obvious station for Trafalgar Square / Nelsons Column

however... it isn't unreasonable for those approaching on District or Circle line to disembark at Embankment as the distance is far less to go out to street level compared to going down to Bakerloo or Northern lines to go one stop only to come out 100m from where you were anyway.

There could be a lot of arguments about this one.

Also requires far more local knowledge than non-Londoners may have.

Theoretically 11.5 points to be gained if none of them are drawn / are passed through. On a twist round advertised as this in advance it could be worth plotting a route to do this rather than the 15 stations in the envelope.

Well then, perhaps a maximum of 8 (four points). Four hour limit still applies though...

To add a couple to this:

"Anti-Line" - at the meet-up of the preceding round, a challenger draws one of the eleven tube lines, Overground and DLR from a bag. No stations on this line are allowed to be used (they will not go into the draw and may not be visited). In addition, certain stations must also be eliminated (Lambeth North, Southwark and Brixton for Northern, West Ken, Ken Oly, Chiswick Park and H&I for Piccadilly, Bethnal Green for H&C and currently also Marylebone for Circle (until Edgware Road opens)) This could cause only minor-no inconvenience (e.g. W&C or DLR), quite a bit of hassle (e.g. Victoria, Central or Metropolitan) or be absolutely devastatingly deadly (Northern, District, Piccadilly or LO). This has been mentioned before (anti-Circle).

"Shirts" - mentioned aboard the Northern line during Round 2 - you may only board a train if you are wearing the correct colour shirt (e.g. red for Central, brown for Bakerloo, red/orange/blue for SWT). You can leave a few behind, but that's a chance you're going to have to take.

Wombles
For every station on the 15, you have to switch from overground to underground, or vice versa.
- Overground - the overground, NR, DLR, bus, cable car, walk, thames clipper, boris bikes
- Underground - well... LU lines (including ones that sit above ground eg Edgware Rd).
You're not allowed to switch again until you find another on your 15.
Changes between overground things are allowed between two stations of the 15. so you can DLR + bus to your next station in the 15.

Cheapskate - single challenge
Use a Z1-6 single for the entire route - i.e. no barriers must take the ticket. Paper ticket (non oyster) would be required.

Banned Stations
A list of banned stations as well as the 15, so no routes can include those stations. This may need to be curated somehow.

Accessibility Challenge
(Would need curated list) - No escalators or stairs...

Accessibility challenge has been mentioned somewhere.

Cheapskate - you should read "The All Tube Challenge"
http://www.tubeforum.co.uk/forum/index. ... =viewtopic

Wombles - I think it's a great idea! "Single Visit" is similar, but not the same.

Banned Stations - what do you think of "Anti-Line"? Banned Stations could get a bit restrictive (especially if randomly drawn).

Another twist idea!! I originally thought this up as a type of bus challenge, but it seemed very boring and repetitive. Here is what you do:

1) Shuffle all 132 Zone 1 and 2 stations and number them 1 to 132.
2) Generate a 15 digit string of numbers (e.g. 860165050163538).
3) You must make your way along the string in order, taking a few digits at a time, and visiting the corresponding stations. For example:

Station 86  Station 016  Station 5  Station 050  Station 16  Station 3 etc.

or possibly:

Station 8  Station 60  Station 1  Station 6  Station 50  Station 50 etc.

Rules for visiting:
- You may take 016 to be 16 if you wish (similarly with other strings starting with zero).
- To visit a station twice in a row (e.g. Station 50 to Station 50 in the second iteration), you must visit another station in between the two visits.

I don't know how good this would be, and perhaps you might want to extend the string (I would not shorten it!)

Not sure if this would work but "forced switch" - every time you hit an intersection then you have to change lines. Not counting two lines running together.
