Another new idea for a challenge - the F1 Challenge

Post by Rhys1995 »

Okay so I was in the bath.. (true story) and I thought up a new challenge...

Essentially how the F1 Challenge works is pretty simple: It follows the same layout as the R15 (meet at starting station for a time, given an envelope in with same stations yadda yadda), however the stations are in a certain order that they must be visited in. Example (starting station being Ealing Broadway)
Lap 1. North Greenwich
Lap 2. Woolwich Arsenal
Lap 3. Imperial Wharf
Lap 4. Lancaster Gate

Sounds boring, I guess? However how it does have its differences:

1. Zones 1-4 are included in the station draw, done by a BERC.
2. Tube, DLR, LO are in the draw (it'll be designed so that there will be 'laps' further apart so another example: 4. Parsons Green 5. Neasden 6. Finchley Road 7. Homerton
3. There would be 10 laps per 'race', however if this was successful we could have longer races
4. In every race one must have two pit stops. A pit stop would be getting off at a 'lap' station (this is just half an idea I guess)
5. The first person back to the pub is the winner so even after Lap 10 it would be a sprint to the pub
6. Point system would be same as in F1

What do you all think?

As a harcore F1 fan, sounds good to me.

Just a couple of alterations...

There needs to be a minimum of one pit stop to comply to F1 regulations. Alternatively, a "pit stop" means you must buy some water (equivalent to fuel). There needs to be at least one pit stop if there is a 10-lap race or more.

Also, to stop people following each other sheepishly around the course, there needs to be some sort of qualifying session. I propose the following:

A station shall be chosen, ideally within 10 minutes proximity of the station but with multiple ways of getting there. As soon as it is revealed, the "master clock", 20 minutes, must be started. Those teams must get to that station and back to the original meet point. The slowest team(s) will be eliminated from Q1. After the watch has elapsed 20 minutes, the competitors may finish that particular inter-station journey, and that is their finish point for Q1. This procedure continues for Q2, but the watch is down to 15 minutes and a new station is chosen. For Q3, the final "shoot-out", the watch is down to 10 minutes and a new station chosen.

So, for example:

Q1:
Starting station: Baker Street
Selected station: Waterloo
Some teams take Jubilee, some Bakerloo. There are 22 teams and the slowest six are eliminated.

The "grid" shall be determined by finishing position in qualifying. Obviously, the adjudicator(s) cannot participate. On "race day", people shall be released in order of grid position according to a head-start procedure.

Possible set of regulations?

These are based on the 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship regulations, amended when necessary.

TECHNICAL REGULATIONS

1 TRAINS

1.1
Trains will be divided into thirteen sections. Eleven of these will be London Underground lines. The other two will be Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains and London Overground trains. The London Underground trains will be grouped into two categories: "subsurface" for the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines; "deep level" for the Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, and Waterloo & City lines.
1.2 Trains are not permitted to carry objects on the outside of them which may cause a lack of driver visibility, such as ribbons.
1.3 Aside from the doors, windows, switches, and ventilation, no moveable aerostatic or aerodynamic devices on the trains are permitted.

2 COMPETITORS

2.1
Competitors may not be forced into participating in the challenge.
2.2 Competitors must be able to stand and sweat in crowded trains.
2.3 Competitors may not use performance-enhancing drugs to improve "on foot" runs.
2.4 Competitors may not use any form of electrical charge to artificially lower or increase their heart rate for "on foot" runs.
2.5 Competitors must be able to travel on the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, and London Overground safely.
2.6 The weight of the competitors must be no lower than 5kg at all times during the event. If, when required for checking, appropriate clothing is not fitted, it will be by the race organisers defined in article 3 of the sporting regulations.
2.7 The weight distribution of the competitor may not be artificially altered from left to right to aid cornering ability.
2.8 Footwear must be appropriate (at the decision of the race organisers defined in article 3 of the sporting regulations) and not be any heavier than 50kg at all times during the event.
2.9 No additional ballast may be used.
2.10 If it becomes necessary to replace shoes or items of clothing during the event, the new part may not differ in weight from the original.
2.11 With the exception of article 4.2, competitors are not permitted to carry objects on the outside of them which may cause a lack of visibility, such as ribbons.
2.12 Aside from normal body parts, no moveable aerostatic or aerodynamic devices on the clothes are permitted.

3 WATER

3.1
Any water purchased during the event must consist largely of oxygen and hydrogen.
3.2 Any water purchased must be labelled as "water" as sold.
3.3 Any water may have additional ingredients placed in it as long as this complies with articles 2.3 and 3.2.
3.4 The police or race organisers defined in article 3.1 of the sporting regulations have the right to test the product at any time.

4 CONTAINERS OF WATER

4.1
Containers which are able to hold water may only consist of plastic. Other methods of transportation will be at the discretion of the race organisers defined in article 3.1 of the sporting regulations.
4.2 The container may be carried in the competitor's hand or pocket. It may be placed on the floor, seats, or "shelves" of any trains travelled on.
4.3 Containers may not exceed 5 litres.
4.4 Containers may be disposed of in designated litter bins.

5 CLOTHING

5.1
Clothing may not distract others in any way, extending to article 2.12.

SPORTING REGULATIONS

1 CLASSIFICATION

1.1
The competitor or team who placed first will be the one having covered the scheduled distance in the shortest time, or, where appropriate, passed a designated station after the time limit. All competitors or teams will be classified taking into account the number of complete laps they have covered, and for those which have completed the same number of laps, the order in which they arrived at a designated station.
1.2 Competitors having covered less than 90% of the number of laps covered by the winner (rounded down to the nearest whole number of laps), will not be classified.
1.3 The official classification will be published after the race by the race organisers defined in article 3.1 of the sporting regulations. It will be the only valid result.

2 RACE PROTOCOL

2.1
The competitor or team may not use artificial aids to run.
2.2 Competitors must stick to legally defined areas of London. This extends to a prohibition on trespassing on private properties. A competitor may not deliberately leave these areas without justifiable reason, which may be explained to the police.
2.3 More than one change of direction to defend a position is not permitted. Any competitor moving back towards the racing line, having earlier defended his position off-line, should leave at least their opponent's width between oneself and the edge of the area in keeping with article 2.2.
2.4 Any competitor defending his position on a straight, and before any braking area, may use the full width of the area during his first move, provided no significant portion of the person attempting to pass is alongside oneself. Whilst defending in this way the competitor may not leave the areas defined in article 2.2 without justifiable reason.
2.5 Manoeuvres liable to hinder others, whether they be spectators or competitors, such as deliberate crowding of a competitor or member of the public beyond the edge of the areas defined in article 2.2, or any other abnormal change of direction, are not permitted.

3 OFFICIALS AND PENALISATION

3.1
The officials consist of three race stewards, a race director, a race starter, and the clerk of the course.
3.2 The race director will have control of the following: The control of qualifying and the race, adherence to the timetable and, if he or she deems it necessary, the making of any proposal to the stewards to modify the race timetable; The disqualification of any competitor; The stopping of qualifying or suspension of the race if he or she deems it unsafe to continue and ensuring that the correct restart procedure is carried out; The starting procedure.
3.3 The race director must be present before competitors.
3.4 The race director must be in contact with the stewards at all times.
3.5 Should an infringement of the technical or sporting regulations be reported by a competitor, the race director shall make a decision whether this needs to be investigated at whatever time he or she feels necessary on the day of the allegation. If he or she does not decide that there need not be an investigation, no penalties shall be applied. If he or she does feel the need that an investigation should be undertaken, the matter will be referred to the race stewards. The race stewards will hear a case from the competitor making the allegations and a defence from the alleged. The race stewards will have final decision on application of penalties. These may be a time penalty, a grid penalty, a disqualification, or suspension from one or more events.
3.6 Any infringements may result in legal action. The race director and race stewards may only refer the matter to the police if they have reason to believe law-breaking has occurred.

4 TRACKS AND STATIONS

4.1
Stations are officially recognised openings of doors by Transport for London.
4.2 Purchasing of water as defined in article 3 of the technical regulations, will occur at a station, and the competitor must have all body parts and clothes (defined in articles 2.12 of the technical regulations and 5.1 of the technical regulations) within the station premises. The competitor may not have any body parts, clothes (defined in articles 2.12 of the technical regulations and 5.1 of the technical regulations) or personal belongings on any tracks or trains.
4.3 Devices which prop open doors of any trains at stations are prohibited.
4.4 Competitors must not paint lines on any part of any stations, tracks, or trains.
4.5 It is the responsibility of the competitor to release themselves off or on a train when it is safe to do so.
4.6 Under exceptional circumstances stations may be closed during the race for safety reasons.
4.7 Tracks may only be traversed by trains. Competitors may be asked to traverse tracks under instructions of Transport for London.

5 STOPPING FOR WATER

5.1
At least one stop must be made at a designated station during the race.
5.2 Adequate money must be provided to the cashier according to his or her prices or terms.
5.3 Water may not be returned after payment, nor may water be stolen.

6 POINTS

6.1
The Championship title will be awarded to the competitor who has scored the highest number of points, taking into consideration all the results obtained during the events which have actually taken place.
6.2 Points for both titles will be awarded at each Event according to the following scale: 1st : 25 points, 2nd : 18 points, 3rd : 15 points, 4th : 12 points, 5th : 10 points, 6th : 8 points, 7th : 6 points, 8th : 4 points, 9th : 2 points, 10th : 1 point.
6.3 If a race is suspended, and cannot be resumed, no points will be awarded if the leader has completed less than two laps, half points will be awarded if the leader has completed more than two laps but less than 75% of the original race distance and full points will be awarded if the leader has completed 75% or more of the original race distance.
6.4If two or more competitors finish the season with the same number of points, the higher place in the Championship shall be awarded to the holder of the greatest number of first places. If the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places. If the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges. If this procedure fails to produce a result, the race organisers (defined in article 3.1) will declare a winner.

7 QUALIFYING

7.1
Save where these sporting regulations require otherwise, all safety measures will be the same for all qualifying sessions as for the race.
7.2 Should any infringements of these sporting regulations occur, article 3.5 will be implemented.
7.3 The qualifying practice session will take place as follows: In Q1 all competitors will be set a specific task and at the end of this period the slowest will be prohibited from taking any further part in the session. In Q2 the remaining competitors will be set a specific task and at the end of this period the slowest cars will be prohibited from taking any further part in the session. In Q3 the ten remaining competitors will be set a specific task. If 24 competitors are entered seven will be excluded after Q1 and Q2 and if 22 cars are entered only six cars will be excluded after Q1 and Q2, and so on.
7.4 Any driver who stops during the qualifying session will not be permitted to take any further part in the session.

8 THE GRID

8.1
During Q1, any driver whose time exceeds 150% of the fastest time set during that session, or who fails to set a time, will not be allowed to take part in the race.
8.2 The grid will be drawn up as follows: The last positions will be occupied by the competitors eliminated during Q1. The next positions will be occupied by the competitors eliminated during Q2. The top ten positions will be occupied by the competitors which took part in Q3, the fastest from the position on the grid known as "pole position". If two or more competitors set identical times during Q1, Q2 or Q3 priority will be given to the one who set it first. If more than one competitor fails to set a time during Q2 or Q3 they will be arranged in the following order: Any competitor who attempted to set a qualifying time by starting a task, any competitor who failed to start a task, any competitor who failed to start during the period. Once the grid has been established in accordance with the provisions above, grid position penalties will be applied to the drivers in question in the order the offences were committed.

If you spot anything you think needs changing, leave a comment.

Don't bother. He's just taken the FIA Formula One sporting and technical regulations and replaced words relevant to F1 with words relevant to tube challenging.

I believe that was the intention. It doesn't actually contain anything that tells you what the idea of the challenge is.
