Yet another idea for a challenge!

Hello everyone!

After some sad amounts of thinking I have come up with yet another new idea for a challenge - the distance challenge.

THE RULES:

Participants get together at a starting station for a certain time (same old same old), then have a certain amount of hours to cover as much distance around London as possible.

To make it fair, once you have visited a station, stretch of line, bus route or whatever you cannot do it again on the whole challenge (so you can't just ferry yourself from Fenchurch Street to Upminster and back again, once you get to Upminster you'd have to get a bus to Romford as an example)

All modes of transport are accepted

With every meet up there will be certain stations, landmarks and general quirks that will gain 'bonus miles' as such so a working example:
Big Ben: 1.5 miles
Heathrow airport: 15 miles
Dag + Red FC: 9 miles

To finish all participants MUST meet back at the 'finishing station' which will be separate to the starting station within the given time plus 5 minutes and anyone who doesn't make the cut is disqualified.

After all participants meet up at the end you work out the distance you've done yourself when you get signal (so an Internet enabled phone is pretty vital :P )

Just to give you all an idea what it might look like:

Distance Challenge 2013 Round 1 date: xx/xx/2013 Starting time: xx:xx hours

Participants have FOUR hours to cover as much distance as possible.

Bonus miles will be given for visiting:

Tower of London: 2 miles
Willesden Junction: 4.5 miles
London City Airport (DLR only): 3.5 miles
Fulham Broadway: 4 miles
Heathrow Airport: 12 miles
M + S at Westfield Stratford: 7 miles
News International: 6 miles
Bruce Grove: 5 miles
AFC Wimbledon: 10 miles
Brockley: 7 miles

What do you all think?

I don't think that distance can be calculated accurately enough for the challenge to be workable.

Exactly. Any bus routes taken could just be Google mapped as well. What do y'all think?

What about National Rail?

Those distances are available too.

Indeed they are, freely available in the National Rail Timetable (or a Quail map)

Indeed, just an idea. How I would get the 'bonus point' stations/places would be simple. Get someone external to pick the places out of a hat, tralala. Not blowing my own trumpet here but I think this challenge could be interesting.

What's preventing me boarding a Virgin train to Scotland?

I would imagine the list of stations one can visit is limited to those found on a Tube map or, at a push, a London Connections map.

Am I allowed to start in Slough?

To reiterate, yes. Stations are limited to the London Connections tube map only (and this doesn't include the places in red such as Slough or Aylesbury, sorry tractakid, funny that.) I should probably rename it 'London distance challenge'. So there. Oh and if you did get the train up to Scotland I doubt you'd make it back in time at the end meeting point

TFL buses run to slough.
