Random 15 Championship 2017/18: Round 2

Post by tangy » 28 Oct 2017, 06:53

Hello and welcome to the 2017/18 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 Challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map and/or London Connections Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone/s or network/s e.g. DLR, National Rail onto the challenge and these are known as "twist" rounds.

The rules of the Random 15 Challenge are unchanged from last season but if anyone is not familiar with these (or how the scoring works), they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

The 2017/18 season is entering round 2. So here is the vital details for you:

When: Saturday 18th November 2017 12:30 UK local time.
Pre-Challenge meet up point: WHITECHAPEL, meet by the current temporary entrance on Court Street.
[/color] Post challenge meet up point: The Bricklayers Arms pub, Gresse Street (off TCR, the road).
Variant: Round 2 is a normal R15 but with a live draw. Thus there will no envelopes to rip open instead challengers present at the start will select the other 14 stations to visit out of a bucket. Please be at the meet up point for 12:20 for the live draw to be conducted and the challenge to commence promptly at 12:30.
Time limit for completing: As this is normal round, the time limit to complete is 4 hours.

Closures directly affecting the challenge:
--Bakerloo: Closed throughout
--Overground DC Line: Closed Euston- Willesden Junction

Other engineering work to be aware of:
--c2c: All trains will run to/from Fenchurch Street. No direct trains Stratford- Barking.
--Crossrail: No service Liverpool Street- Romford
--DLR: No service Bow Church- Stratford.
--Greater Anglia (East): No service Liverpool Street- Shenfield. Buses to/from Newbury Park.
--Greater Anglia (West): No service via Tottenham Hale/Lea Bridge- diversions via Seven Sisters.
--Overground GOBLIN: Closed throughout
--Southern: Reduced service at London Victoria, some trains diverted to London Bridge. No Gatwick Express.
--South Eastern: Cannon Street closed, thus no trains between Cannon Street and London Bridge or onwards to/from Charlton via Greenwich. Diversions to/from Charing X.
--Thameslink: No trains Blackfriars- London Bridge, diversions via Elephant.

Let the madness continue...

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- it always is, except when you actually want one!

I've noticed that this falls upon the 30th anniversary of the King's Cross fire.
I'm not saying we should mark it, but if we're passing through and there is any sort of commemoration going on, I hope we'll all show the appropriate decorum.

The start station, as chosen by Neil Ansell, from the bucket that contains all the stations for this round is...

...WHITECHAPEL (meet by the current temporary entrance to the station in Court Street).

Therefore anyone coming by West Anglia Overground to Bethnal Green NR then transferring on foot to Whitechapel will need to take note of temporary entrance as it is a longer walk beyond the normal entrance on the main road.

That sounds like an interesting start!

From my point of view, easy enough to get to from Paddington (straight along the H&C).

If any of the dozen stations east of Whitechapel are drawn, it's obvious to go that way first, otherwise head west (and you have until Aldgate East to decide whether you want H&C or District!). That, plus the draw gives useful time to plot the stations and come up with a route, so not a bad start for anyone who hasn't done one before.

On the other hand, there's potential for interesting gambits involving the DLR or C2C.

It's also almost as far as you can get from Willesden Junction, which is useful if that comes up!
