I just did a quick interview with Lorna at BBC 3CR to let her know that Rachel's record has been beaten by Andi, Sara & Martin. Unfortunately Rachel will be unable to join us on 24th July for the Tube Olympics.

Congratulations to the team.

Here is my naive question for today: On a GWR attempt, is the clock stopped

(i) When the doors open at the final station,
(ii) When the first team member steps onto the platform,
(iii) When the last team member steps onto the platform?

From the rules:
7. The clock must start the moment the doors close on the first train taken by the challengers.

It must stop the moment the challengers set foot on the platform at the last station.
Challengers, plural - I think that means all of them.

Why does it involve doors at the start and feet at the end? Surely go for doors both times...

We go with first foot on the platform, therefore the last member of the team could possibly be 0.5 second behind the first member. Also what about the doors closing at Amersham, we start the watch at the door we are standing by, but some doors close 1 second later! It really makes no difference if you lose the record by 17 seconds, but imagine losing it by 1 or 2 seconds? If you have a generous stopwatch operator who starts the watch when the last set of doors closes at Amersham and stops it when the doors are 1mm apart at Heathrow T5, then this could make a difference of 1-2 seconds. I would be very miffed to lose a record by such a small margin.

First foot on the platform is the only reasonable interpretation. If you had to wait until the last person stepped off the train, you could shave off the extra seconds by declaring it a solo attempt, and pretending that everyone else was just following you around as support crew. Obviously that means they won't get their name in the record book, but hey, you've got to make some sacrifices for the good of the record attempt, right?

Clearly, any rule that rewards you for doing something as despicable as that is broken and needs to be fixed.

But if you're after some language lawyering to justify that under the exact wording of the Guinness rule, then how about this: "the challengers" can be regarded as a collective entity. "the moment the challengers set foot on the platform" can be taken to mean the moment that a foot belonging to "the challengers" is present on the platform. Problem solved.

9th attempt july 24th tube olympics day not confirmed as too many people off work.?
So Andi.... did you do a sneaky attempt on your birthday, or was this cancalled in the end? Also what about the planned attempt 21st July, is that still happening?
