A997 is the highest three-digit A-road number that has ever been used in Britain. The A997 once ran for just over a mile from Causewayhead to Blairlogie in Stirlingshire, but has now been reclassified as the B998.

You seem to have 998 covered...

999 is the emergency telephone number for the United Kingdom used to summon the Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade and Coastguard services.

Merry Christmas GuyBarry.

Well, you're not really supposed to do two in one post. But what the hell, it's Christmas...

1000 Chiffres/1000 Numbers is a video by Olivier Hodasava consisting of images of the numbers 1 to 1000 taken from Street View, with music by David Martin Angor. It was put together to mark the 1000th day of his blog "Dreamlands", a virtual travel diary. I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I thought I was going to get told off for cheating!

If you need to give anyone a belated Christmas present, maybe 1002 Terrible Puns is the thing. (Sample: "As I only just failed my trial as a mortuary assistant, they said I cadaver second go.")

In Korean, the number 1004 (chun sa) sounds like the word for "angel". It's given its name to 1004 Virus, a campaign to support children with rare diseases in Korea.

The supernova SN 1006, the brightest stellar event in history, occurred between 30 April and 1 May in AD 1006. In 2012 - coincidentally 1006 years later - a team of researchers from the University of Barcelona found that it probably occurred as a result of the merger of two white dwarfs.

[I stand corrected! Flight numbers are still good for four digits, though they always seem to be associated with fatal accidents...]

Dan-Air Flight 1008 crashed on 25 April 1980 on a non-scheduled flight from Manchester to Tenerife, killing all 146 on board.

The twelve pentominoes are a set of geometric figures formed by joining five squares edge to edge, which can be used in a variety of geometrical puzzles. In particular, they can be used to construct a 5x12 rectangle in exactly 1010 different ways.
