Then you must be talking about the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest? Surely it's not that unthinkable that a Western European, Scandinavian or Nordic country will win?

He never said it was unthinkable, just that he can't confidently predict it...

And re fancy dress: at least two people have taken part in Zone 1 Day wearing a kilt, so there's a precedent there. Bonus points for doing it in an equally strange Finnish national costume. Double bonus points for doing it in a Lordi costume.

A kilt is not a fancy dress item

OK I will rule out the Scandinavian block. Sweden has gone for a real schlager which will only appeal to a few countries. Norway has gone for a really boring song and missed the chance to send King of the Trolls. Denmark middle of the road and will possibly not even make the final. Iceland is very good but I have doubts how it will play live.

Nordic countries.... errr well I guess I mean Finland, and they have opted for Lordi Mark II, with a fine piece of heavy metal but I doubt it will repeat the success of 2006.

If you must look to Western Europe then perhaps the best chance comes surprisingly from Portugal and I'm sure they can improve on their previous best of 6th place.

But the smart money will be on Serbia to retain the trophy with Russia hot on their heels with Dima Bilan who finished 2nd in 2006. My personal favourite (at the moment) is Slovenia with good odds of 66-1.
One day I shall return!

I don't understand how some people can be so interested in Eurovision. I didn't even know when it was taking place until I looked up "May 24th" on Wikipedia. I don't know what any country is sending and I almost certainly won't be watching it. What's the appeal? Actually I admit it is quite funny watching countries vote in blocs, because it is so predictable.

My brother is ridiculously consumed by it also, and he absolutely loathes Terry Wogan for "ruining" it.

Actually, it's utterly abysmal.

But that's what makes it brilliant.

Whoops... looks like I've taken this someway off topic, so I will make no further comments about ESC '08.

Too late!

Abysmal indeed. Bill Bailey isn't the UK entry this year so it's going to be abysmal again this year. Fingers crossed for 09 though!

Hi, I am new to the forums and new to the tube challenges. I would like to take part in the Zone 1 challenge (what could be the first of many) and was curious of the rules. I would also like advice on what to expect from the day.

Thanks.

Hi mullardo and welcome to the forum!

The complete rules will be published in or near this thread during the month of April. In short, the participants will be given a random Z1 start station and then proceed to visit all 64 Zone 1 station as quickly as possible. Visiting means arriving and/departing on a LU train. Other means of public transportation is allowed to move between stations as well as running/walking. No private transportation is allowed.

If you browse this forum wou'll find lot' of refernces to previous years' Z1Cs and the rules used then. They will be quite similar this year!

Looking forward to seeing you at the Z1C 2008!

Just joined the forum, - really want to take part in the Zone 1 challenge this year, ( by chance, or perhaps not, the proposed date falls within school half terms ). In thinking of a venue for a post race meeting - some of the contestants may be under ' drinking age ' ( is that possible in this benighted country of ours ) . I'll be competing with my 8 year old grandson and I'd hate him to be barred from a bar.
