Photo Quiz 8.20 (Closed)

Post by tangy »

The last quiz in round 8 and after giving you an easy time the last couple of rounds, it is time to up the difficulty factor a bit. This is fresh off the camera too, so to speak.

Usual deadline of Monday (7th Sept) at 2000. Although since I am away on a training course, answers won't be revealed until I get back.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Ah ha! This one came to me right away. A quick check confirms my suspicions and I'm confident I've got this one right.

Unfortunately that answer is not 100% correct.

South Tottenham station lies between South Tottenham Junction, which provides a link the line out of Liverpool Street via Seven Sisters, and Tottenham South Junction, linking to the line from Liverpool Street via Tottenham Hale. Freight trains requiring to get from Seven Sisters to Temple Mills are required to travel over the GOBLIN between these two junctions, hence the erection of AC wires for that small section of line.

So the answer is South Tottenham without doubt.

I should have explained more, I used "" to try and show its what most unfamiliar with the line think - including myself, until I researched it.

The GOBLIN is also electrified between Woodgrange Park Junction and Barking for the same reason - freight trains from Forest Gate out to Barking and Dagenham which have AC locos (class 90's and 92's for example).

As I did mention in my opening post of this quiz, the answer will be delayed until I got back from my training course. Is the suspense getting too much for you?

Now that I am back on my home computer I am now in position to reveal the answer. As tubeguru has already spoiled the show... it is indeed South Tottenham. Looks like the presence of the overhead wires didn't steer you off course...

Those that got the correct answer:
--tubeguru
--mps247
--Edgemaster
--Lancaster Gate
--barrykas
--greatkingrat
--jbom1
--scrxisi

There is always one:
--Starkey, who says if in doubt say Brondesbury, it has to be Brondesbury. One day it might be!!

Happy now?

The South Tottenham link between Seven Sisters and the Tottenham Hale/Temple Mills line is also used occasionally by diversion of passenger trains via Seven Sisters (instead of via Tottenham Hale). To retain drivers knowledge of the link there is a booked passenger working via South Tottenham, the 0528 Saturday Only from Liv St to Enfield Town (via Temple Mills).

The overhead wires between Forest Gate junction and Barking flyover are also useful for the diversion of c2c trains into Liv St should access into Fenchurch Street be closed for any reason.

Once again, here's a diagram of the South Tottenham area with the non-electrified lines in yellow and the AC bits in cyan.
