Grange Hill was on my short list too. I had wondered about Pauline Quirke, but the question asks for the character rather than the person. Or the crew Christmas Party outtakes for something like Jackanory or Play School. Or John Noakes when Lulu (not that one) trod on his foot.

No,none of those. But yes, definitely a character, rather than an actor/actress or presenter, is what I'm looking for here.

Incidentally apparently the elephant didn't step on John Noakes's foot - he just said "Get off my foot" to play to the camera!

David C has it - it was Major Clanger!

Although the 'language' of the Clangers was played on swannee whistles, in order to give a rhythm to what the characters were saying, their lines were 'scripted' in English.

I don't think France originated in Germany!

This is something that was invented by an Italian living in a German city, and named after that city, but in French. English also uses the French name, though we pronounce it differently.

Was going on the fact that "Francia" (named in Latin), was the area that is southern France and eastern Germany.
