Round The World meets Mornington Crescent

Can you identify a station from just a paving slab? Sadly, some people can

Round The World meets Mornington Crescent

Post by RJSRdg »

Here's how it works:

The game is played over a number of rounds. Each round starts off with a different Underground station (first round starts with Acton Town, and so on). Each player has to name an Underground station that begins with the last letter of the previous one, and which hasn't been used before e.g Acton Town > Northfields > South Ealing > Goodge Street, etc. No player may take two consecutive turns in a 24-hour period. So if Fred played "Goodge Street", he would have to wait 24 hours before playing "Tottenham Court Road", by which time George may well have played "Tottenham Hale" instead. However as soon as George has played, Fred is able to play "East Acton" as there has been an intervening move since his last one.

Heathrow Terminal numbers are assumed to be written as words - so Heathrow Termials 1,2,3 ends in E, as does Heathrow Terminal 5. Heathrow terminal 4 ends in R.

Hammersmith, Paddington and Edgware Road are used without line suffixes (i.e. H&C/C, Bakerloo etc) but may be used TWICE per round.

The round ends when:

1) A player plays "Mornington Crescent" - scores 20 points. It is not permitted to play "Mornington Crescent" immediately after the start of a new round i.e. on the turn immediately following a start at AMERSHAM, CHESHAM,ICKENHAM etc.

2) A player plays a station ending in "y" - loses 10 points because there are no stations beginning with "y" with which to continue.

3) A player plays a station such that there are no longer any stations beginning with its last letter that have not already been used, or that the only remaining station beginning with that letter ends in "y" (e.g. when the last remaining stations beginning with "E" are "Ealing Broadway" and "East Putney") - scores 10 points.

The new round begins with the next starting station alphabetically (Round 2 begins with Aldgate) except that Mornington Crescent and stations ending in "y" are skipped. Declaration of a new round counts as a turn and is subject to the 24 hour rule. When a new round starts, the slate is wiped clean so stations used in a previous round can be used again.

Does this make sense?

Off we go then, with Round 1, ACTON TOWN.

Out of interest, what happens if a person played Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3, Heathrow Terminal 4 or Heathrow Terminal 5? I don't think this is possible because of the sheer number of stations beginning with H, but out of curiosity?

As with Tubeblock, I can see the potential to extend to London Rail and Tube Services - Underground, DLR, National Rail (of which Overground is a subset) and the Croydon Tramlink. Of course, duplicate stations would have to be addressed, so let's keep it as it is unless we get thoroughly bored of the restricted version.

I play SOUTHFIELDS, by the way.
