Rare Entries XI - tubes

Post by Iain »

Usual rare entries rules. All questions/answers relate to the London Underground system, stations, lines etc and not LO, DLR etc unless explicitly stated. Answers refer to current lines, stations etc, so no using Aldwych or the ELL as an answer, for instance. Tube here refers to both sub-surface and deep lines. Answers by end of play on Friday 18th April 2014 AD. Extensions may be given at my discretion, but don't bank on it. Here goes:

1) Name a tube station in both zones one and two
2) Please give a station where the name appears across more than one line on platform roundels
3) Name a station where the platform roundels contain all five vowels of the English language
4) Name a station on the Bakerloo line where platform roundels contain exactly two letter "o"s
5) Give a station not at the end of a line/branch for the public where doors can open both sides (because there's a platform adjacent)
6) Name a station that has exactly three LU platforms in operation in everyday use
7) Give a pair of stations where the name of station A is included in the name of station B. Names as they appear on the TfL map
8 ) Name a station where the name does not contain any of the letters A, E or I
9) Name a station that includes the letter X
10) Give a station name that includes a colour that does NOT match any of the lines it is on. Answers based on "Green" are disallowed.

Answers by PM to me please :)

Ok, well the deadline's been reached but since I'm not going to have time to look at the answers until Monday, I'll extend the deadline by 48 hours until midnight on Sunday :)

Okay folks, here's the results:

1st DrainBrain 320
2nd Urzz 1600
3rd OrangeOne 2880
4th= Sam/Tractakid 3456
6th= GKR/TC95 3840
8th JamestheGill 17280
10th= Garion/Al 34560
11th HopefulTraveller 110592
12th Nozza 138240

Now the bit that will cause arguments!

1) Name a tube station in both zones one and two
VAUXHALL – Garion, Sam
Elephant and Castle – Tractakid, TC95
Notting Hill Gate – Urzzz, DrainBrain, Nozza, OrangeOne
Earl’s Court – Al, HT, GreatKingRay, JamestheGill

2) Please give a station where the name appears across more than one line on platform roundels
HIGH STREET KENSINGTON – Garion, Sam
Harrow on the Hill – Tractakid, TC95
KXSP – Orange One
South Wimbledon – Urzzz
Incorrect – Nozzacook, DrainBrain, Al, HT, GKR, JTG

Hillingdon hasn’t had Swakeleys as part of the name since the middle of the last century, so the name is on one line. Totteridge and Whetstone appears to be all on one line in spite of the length from an image search - happy to be corrected if there are some on two line, ditto Gloucester Road.

3) Name a station where the platform roundels contain all five vowels of the English language
SOUTH EALING – Garion, Tractakid, Sam, HT, OrangeOne, TC95
Mansion House – Urzzz, Nozza, DrainBrain, GKR, JTG
Incorrect – Al

No-one took advantage of the room allowed for Charing Cross and Warwick Avenue which have bits in brackets

4) Name a station on the Bakerloo line where platform roundels contain exactly two letter "o"s
SOUTH KENTON – Garion, Al, Nozza
Charing Cross - Tractakid
Harrow & Wealdstone – Urzzz, TC95
Waterloo – Sam, HT
Embankment – DrainBrain
Oxford Circus – OrangeOne, JTG, GKR

I came up with this question when I saw the “platform closed” roundels at Embankment, so well done DrainBrain for thinking of that “loophole”. I hadn’t thought that the wording also made Charing Cross a legit answer, in spite of the five vowels question!

5) Give a station not at the end of a line/branch for the public where doors can open both sides (because there's a platform adjacent)
STRATFORD – Garion, Nozza, TC95, JTG
Barking – Tractakid, Sam,
White City – Urzzz, Al,
Golders Green - DrainBrain
Arnos Grove – OrangeOne, GKR
Incorrect answer – HT – if this was one of the tests I gave as a teacher I’d add “RTFQ!”

I was tempted to disallow Barking and Stratford as they’re at the ends of the H&C and Jubilee lines respectively, but you could argue that they’re also not at the end of a line as well!

6) Name a station that has exactly three LU platforms in operation in everyday use
FINCHLEY CENTRAL – Garion, GKR
Leytonstone – Urzzz, Tractakid,
Stanmore – Nozza, Sam
Tower Hill – OrangeOne, HT
Upminster – Al
Plaistow – DrainBrain
North Acton – TC95
North Greenwich - JTG

7) Give a pair of stations where the name of station A is included in the name of station B. Names as they appear on the TfL map

Kenton/South Kenton – Nozza, Al,
Northwood/Northwood Hills – GKR, OrangeOne
Ruislip/South Ruislip – Urzz
Shepherds Bush/Shepherds Bush Market – Sam
Kilburn/Kilburn Park – DrainBrain
Euston/Euston Square – HT
Barking/Barkingside – TC95
Edgware Road/Edgware Road – JTG
South Kenton/South Kensington - Tractakid

Incorrect - Garion - SOUTH EALING/EALING COMMON

8 ) Name a station where the name does not contain any of the letters A, E or I
NORTHOLT – Garion, DrainBrain
Loughton – Tractakid, OrangeOne
Sudbury Town – Urzzz, JTG
Borough – Nozza, Al, HT
South Woodford – Sam
Woodford - GKR

9) Name a station that includes the letter X
VAUXHALL – Garion, Urzzz, Al, OrangeOne, TC95
Croxley – Tractakid, Sam, JTG
Uxbridge – Nozza, GKR
Brixton – HT, DrainBrain

Leaving Oxford Circus not chosen.

10) Give a station name that includes a colour that does NOT match any of the lines it is on. Answers based on "Green" are disallowed.
BLACKHORSE ROAD – Garion, Tractakid, Nozza, Sam, HT, JTG
GOLDers Green – Urzzz,
ChoRlEywooD – Al
Burnt Oak – DrainBrain
Goldhawk Road – TC95
White City – GKR
Blackfriars - OrangeOne

Arguments, pleas, bribes etc by PM please!

I had Croxley as my answer to number 9 - I don't know if it was counted in the totals, but it wasn't mentioned in the above post.

Also, I'd like to dispute the answer to number 2 as this picture says otherwise.

Re Q9 - ah yes, apologies, I've corrected the original post

Regarding Q2, as I said above the name is Hillingdon, which your picture shows appearing on a single line. Yes - there is stuff on a second line, but it's not part of the name of the station, which is what the question was asking about.

Clearly, Garion and I have the same answer here, so a minor re-calc might be needed.

I misunderstood Q2 with its ambiguous word 'line', hence the incorrect answer.

Oops - hang on I'll fix that.

What's ambiguous about the word "line"? What else can it mean in the context of "on platform roundels"?

I thought everyone would have taken advantage of West Ham/West Hampstead. Ah well...

For doors both sides, would you have allowed Gloucester Road?

The Piccadilly Line is the only line with no NR stations on it (although this fact does require Waterloo W&C to be the same as Waterloo NR...)
