Quick F1 Quiz

Post by tubeguru »

I receive a popular F1 magazine in the post every month (my wife renews it for me on my birthday each year). I always enjoy having a go at their sometimes ridiculously-tricky F1 quiz which appears in the magazine each month.

I thought I'd post the latest quiz up here, to see who knows their stuff. Try not to cheat - just see how many you know. Those of you who happen to read this magazine too will recognise the questions, so try to avoid entering unless you haven't seen the answers yet! Have a guess at some of them if you don't know. I usually do, and it tends to pay off.

Please PM me your answers - I'll declare it closed whenever.

1. What was the first F1 season to feature ten or more World Championship Grands Prix? (non-championship events do not count for this one)
2. Sebastian Vettel's first win came at the 2008 Italian GP, but at which race did he score his second?
3. In which decade did Brazil first host a World Championship GP?
4. How old was Lewis Hamilton when he started his first GP in 2007?
5. Who scored Tyrrell's final F1 victory, and where did he do it?
6. Which of these engine manufacturers scored more F1 wins: BRM, Climax or BMW?
7. Damon Hill scored Jordan GP's first win, but which driver scored the team's first pole position? Bonus point if you can name the race where this pole was set.
8. Williams used engines made by which manufacturer in 1988?
9. Which American won the final race of the 1965 season?
10. What did Carlos Reutemann become the first man in F1 history to do at the 1978 Brazilian GP?

Tricky, huh?

Tricky indeed. I think I know two of the answers. I'll have to think about the rest, or failing that, guess. I'll abide by your request not to look them up.

I just realised that question two is worded slightly wrongly for the answer it requires. You need to name the race, and not just the circuit, at which Vettel scored his second GP win.

So from the three entries received so far, could you all amend your answer to question two? That's steeevooo, gkr and snudge27. Thanks.

OK, so I had four entries for this one in the end. I'll post another one up shortly and see how many we get for that. It seems you don't like your tricky F1 quizzes ...

1. What was the first F1 season to feature ten or more World Championship Grands Prix? (non-championship events do not count for this one)

1958, which had eleven Championship rounds.

2. Sebastian Vettel's first win came at the 2008 Italian GP, but at which race did he score his second?

2009 Chinese Grand Prix

3. In which decade did Brazil first host a World Championship GP?

The seventies.

4. How old was Lewis Hamilton when he started his first GP in 2007?

Twenty-two

5. Who scored Tyrrell's final F1 victory, and where did he do it?

Michele Alboreto at the 1983 Detroit GP.

6. Which of these engine manufacturers scored more F1 wins: BRM, Climax or BMW?

Climax, with 40 wins.

7. Damon Hill scored Jordan GP's first win, but which driver scored the team's first pole position? Bonus point if you can name the race where this pole was set.

Rubens Barrichello at the 1994 Belgian GP.

8. Williams used engines made by which manufacturer in 1988?

Judd.

9. Which American won the final race of the 1965 season?

Richie Ginther.

10. What did Carlos Reutemann become the first man in F1 history to do at the 1978 Brazilian GP?

Win a race on Michelin tyres.

OK, so they were the answers. Here are the entries:

Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeevoooooooooooooooooo
====================================

1. The first season was 1950, so I'll guess at 1959
2. 2008 Brazilian GP
3. Pretty sure this is the 1970s - Correct
4. Think he is 27 now, so that would make him 22 in 2007 - Correct
5. I have no idea, I know Martin Brundle drove for them in the 1980's, so I'll say him in the German GP
6. Don't think that BMW scored many wins, and I've never heard of Climax, so I'll plump for BRM.
7. Rubinho? As for where, total guess at Monaco - Driver correct, so one point
8. Mugen?
9. I have no idea, I couldn't even name a US driver from 1965! So lets go for John Smith.
10. As is a common theme, I have no idea, so I'll go for setting the perfect three (pole position, fastest lap, race win). Though thinking about it, it must surely have been done before then, but I can't think of another answer!

greatkingrat
===========

1. 1961
2. Belgium
3. 1970s - Correct
4. 21
5. Jackie Stewart in Germany
6. BRM
7. Rubens Barichello in Japan - Driver correct so one point
8. Ford
9. Mario Andretti
10. lead the race from start to finish

root
====

1. 1968
2. 2009 Chinese Grand Prix - Correct
3. 1970s - Correct
4. 22 - Correct
5. Jackie Stewart
6. BRM
7. Rubens Barrichello, Belgian Grand Prix, can't remember the year - Correct, plus got the race circuit right so a bonus point
8. Renault
9. Phil Hill
10. Win without making a pit stop

Snudge27
========

1. 1958 - Correct
2. Japan 2009
3. 70s - Correct
4. 21
5. Jackie Stewart, Hungaroring
6. Climax
7. Giancarlo Fisichella, Monza
8. Ford
9. JFK
10. Finish a race by going backwards over the start/finish line (see below)

So, after those stellar answers, the scores are:

root - 5
steeevooo - 3
gkr - 2
Snudge27 - 2

With regard to Snudge27's answer of finishing a race whilst going backwards, this is almost what happened to Vittorio Brambilla at the 1975 Austrian GP. The linked video shows edited highlights of the race with no commentary, so here's a brief overview. Niki Lauda leads in number 12 Ferrari, with James Hunt's Hesketh (24) following. Brambilla is in the all-orange March (9). After a couple of crashes, we see both Hunt and Brambilla pass Lauda, whose car was not properly set up for the wet conditions. Hunt was also in trouble though, as his engine was down to seven cylinders. As they came up to Hunt's team mate, Brett Lunger, Brambilla pounced and got past Hunt, who then spent two laps trying to get by his own team mate. With the rain getting worse, a decision was taken to stop the race, but the chequered flag was used, meaning that the race was officially over, with half points being awarded. Brambilla won, and immediately lost control of his car, crashing it into the barrier along the start/finish straight. The first video doesn't show this, but the second one does. The oldest driver in the field at 37, it was Brambilla's only GP victory.
