Great Britain is an island, not a country.

To further complicate things, politically "Great Britain" also includes the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the Isles of Scilly, the Hebrides, and the island groups of Orkney and Shetland. The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are NOT part of Great Britain - they are self-dependent territories with their own legislative and taxation systems.

It was King James II who first procalimed himself "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland (all of it)" in 1604, having succeeded to the separate thrones of England and Scotland following the death of his father James I (and IV of Scotland). England and Scotland remained politically separate as different countries, having their own parliaments. It was the Act of Union in 1707 which finally joined the Kingdom of England with the Kingdom of Scotland to form a new kingdom of "Great Britain".

As for Wales, it was Edward I who made the first serious attempt to annex it to England, conquering it in 1282, and offering up his son (Edward II) as the first "Prince of Wales". The tradition of the eldest male child of the reigning monarch holding this title has continued to this day. The investiture of the current Prince of Wales occured at Caernarfon Castle, where Edward II was born.

The formal union of Wales with England did not take place until 1536, when Welsh law was fully replaced with English law. This means that when the Act of Union 1707 was signed, Wales also became part of the new kingdom of Great Britain.

What about Cyprus? Although in practice still divided in two, as part of it becoming a member of the EU it is legally just one country. What land borders does it have with another country?

Cyprus is an island sovereign state. In other words, it is a country in its own right and is a correct answer in this quiz. The confusion concerning Cyprus comes from the fact that there are four British enclaves on the island.

Did you read what I said? The UK borders Eire, but GB doesn't. However, as Tubeguru pointed out, GB is an island rather than a country...

Right to clarify what countries have intentional borders:

- United Kingdom borders Republic of Ireland and vise visa.
- Cyprus has an international border with british overseas territories of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

OK, I didn't really want to be this pedantic, but your original question was:

Akrotiri and Dhekelia are not countries - they are British dependencies. A British dependency cannot be considered a country, so therefore Cyprus has NO international land borders with any other European country.
