Can you identify a station from just a paving slab? Sadly, some people can

More Cryptic Stations

Post by al »

As there has been a lull in quiz setting, I thought I'd set one of my own, continuing in the theme of cryptic stations. These are mostly all a play on words to some degree or another, and you may need to make a couple of leaps of imagination to get to the right answer.

All the answers are names of stations in Great Britain, served by some form of transport that operates on metal rails (i.e. not necessarily served by what would have been British Rail). The stations are all open at the moment.

PM me your answers by the end of next Thursday, 21st July, and I will post the results on the Friday. Good luck!

1. Salad greeting
2. This thoroughfare goes The Only Way
3. Greet a light fitting?
4. Emerson Carlyle & Hercules
5. The darkest of minerals
6. Do you ever struggle to unscrew this joint?
7. Mouthy footballer
8. Trabants, Ladas and (old) Skodas.
9. This injured rock is lacking something...
10. Anti Aircraft weapon with no ammunition?
11. Guild-laden religious leader next to higher subordinate?
12. Ariel's a fake?!
13. If you add a hyphen after the fourth and fifth letters, you would be forgiven for thinking this station is in Wales.
14. Lily takes the Pet Shop Boys advice in this non-existent place
15. Fletcher's metal instrument

Tiebreaker: Explain the answer for Q15.

So we have to know the names of all the couple of thousand UK stations to have any hope of doing this?

I don't think an encyclopaedic knowledge is necessary. Hopefully you can get a feel for what the answer will be from the clue before looking for a station name to match it, rather than trudging through an alphabetical list of stations.

If no one else wants to enter, then I will. Was it really too hard, or just not interesting?

I'm normally useless at these things so I tend not to enter as more often or not, I dont know many or all of them. Nothing against you or the quiz mate :)

You may as well - I haven't had the time to sit down properly and look at it.
