Rare Entries Quiz - Eurovision

Post by Soup Dragon »

With just two weeks to go until the Eurovision Song Contest it’s time for a fun round of the rare entries quiz. This round will not count towards the overall scores but the winner(s) will receive a suitable prize! :D

1. Name one of the Eurovision “Big 5” countries?
2. Name any UK act since 2002 starting with the letter J?
3. Name any individually named artist or group, up to 2010, who has performed in more that one contest (e.g. Cheryl Baker would not be accepted as she performed for Co-Co in 1978 and Bucks Fizz in 1981)?
4. Name any country that since 1975 has scored NUL points in the Eurovision Final (Semi Final NUL points do not count)?
5. Name a location (Town or City) in the United Kingdom that has hosted the contest?
6. Name a presenter who has hosted the contest when it has been held in the UK?
7. Name any country who has debuted in the contest since 2006.
8. Name any artist or group who have had 5 top twenty UK hits since winning the contest (this can include the artists winning entry, however any artist’s deemed as “featuring” on a hit are excluded)?
9. Name any country to have won three or more contests?
10. Name any county to have entered at least 15 contests but have no wins?

Not enough entries to post results, happy to re-open the quiz if anyone fancies a crack. Most answers are easily available on wiki, although some might take a bit more research!

I cobbled my entry together in thirty minutes, and some of them are a bit obscure. Which just goes to show that even though we now have the internet to make things so much quicker for us, people still can't be arsed to use it.

You guessed it...! Those CD's are fantastic, just ask Matt, with my "Jack in the Box" CD, he would have never discovered Lapponia (Finland, 1977)

With a flood of new entries I have extended the closing deadline to 23:59 on Tuesday 14th June 2011.

Hello London, Worthing calling, the results of the Soup Dragon jury are as follows:

1. Name one of the Eurovision “Big 5” countries?

2 pts Spain - tubeguru, scrixisi
1 pt France - greatkingrat
1 pt United Kingdom - jbom
1 pt Germany - al
1 pt Italy - Sam

Incorrect answer: 4 pts Sweden - Going Underground

Other possible answers: None, The Big 4 became the Big 5 in 2011, when Italy rejoined the contest after 14 years absence.

2. Name any UK act since 2002 starting with the letter J?

2 pts James Fox - greatkingrat, tubeguru
2 pts Javine - scrixisi, al
1 pt Jemini - jbom
1 pt Jessica Garlick - Sam

Incorrect answer: 4pts Janus (Samantha) - Going Underground
Samantha Janus did perform for the UK but this was in 1991, and of course the name starts with an S, otherwise it was a good effort :)

Other possible answers: Jade (Ewen) 2009, Josh (Dubovie) 2010.

3. Name any individually named artist or group, up to 2010, who has performed in more that one contest (e.g. Cheryl Baker would not be accepted as she performed for Co-Co in 1978 and Bucks Fizz in 1981)?

2 pts Cliff Richard - Going Underground, al
1 pt Margot Hielscher - greatkingrat
1 pt Johnny Logan - jbom
1 pt Lys Assia - tubeguru
1 pt Anna Vishy - scrixisi
1 pt Ronnie Carroll - Sam

There are too many correct answers to list!

4. Name any country that since 1975 has scored NUL points in the Eurovision Final (Semi Final NUL points do not count)?

2 pts United Kingdom - jbom, al
1 pt Turkey - greatkingrat
1 pt Iceland - tubeguru
1 pt Norway - Going Underground
1 pt Sam - Switzerland

Incorrect answer: 4 pts Germany - scrixisi
Germany scored 1 point in 1995 and failed to make the final in 1996. They did however score NUL points in 1964 & 1965.

Other possible answers: Finland, Spain, Austria, Lithuania & Portugal

5. Name a location (Town or City) in the United Kingdom that has hosted the contest?

4 pts Edinburgh - jbom, tubeguru, al, sam
2 pts Brighton - greatkingrat, scrixisi
1 pt London - Going Underground

Other possible answers: Birmingham, Harrogate (surprised scrixisi didn't go for this answer)

6. Name a presenter who has hosted the contest when it has been held in the UK?

2 pts Katie Boyle - Going Underground, al
1 pt Moira Sheraer - greatkingrat
1 pt Terry Wogan - tubeguru
1 pt Ulrika Jonsson - scrixisi
1 pt Angela Rippon - Sam

Incorrect answer: 4 pts David Vine - jbom
David Vine provided the commentary for BBC in 1974, but the show was hosted by Katie Boyle

Other possible answer: Jan Leeming

7. Name any country who has debuted in the contest since 2006.

2 pts Georgia - greatkingrat, al
1 pt Armenia - jbom
1 pt Serbia - tubeguru
1 pt San Marino - scrixisi
1 pt Czech Republic - Sam

Incorrect answer: 4pts Bosnia & Herzagovia - Going Underground, Bosnia's debut was in 1993

Other possible answers: Azerbaijan (2008), Montenegro (2007)

8. Name any artist or group who have had 5 top twenty UK hits since winning the contest (this can include the artists winning entry, however any artist’s deemed as “featuring” on a hit are excluded)?

3 pts ABBA - jbom, scrixisi, Going Underground
2 pts Dana - greatkingrat, tubeguru
1 pt Bucks Fizz - Sam

Incorrect answer: 6 pts Cliff Richard, al.
Sadly Cliff never won Eurovision, although it is alleged that he would have won in 1968 had Spain not bribed certain juries to vote for "La, la, la"

Other possible answers: Brotherhood of Man, Céline Dion (I can't think of any others but there might be more)

9. Name any country to have won three or more contests?

all scoring 1 point
Luxembourg - greatkingrat
United Kingdom - jbom
Norway - tubeguru
France - scrixisi
Ireland - Going Underground
Netherlands - al
Israel - Sam

Other possible answer: Sweden

10. Name any county to have entered at least 15 contests but have no wins?

2 pts Iceland - greatkingrat, Going Underground
1 pt Portugal - jbom
1 pt Bosnia & Herzagovia - tubeguru
1 pt Cyprus - scrixisi
1 pt Slovenia - al
1 pt Poland - Sam

Other possible answers: Croatia (18 entries), Malta (23 entries)

=============

And so the results

1. Sam 4 pts (how does she do it???)
2. greatkingrat 32 pts
2. tubeguru 32 pts
4. jbom 48 pts
4. scrixisi 48 pts
6. al 768 pts
7. Going Underground 1536pts (good effort as he didn't use the interweb!)

So prizes on their way for Sam, and also one for Kevin as a booby prize :)

Thanks.

I have no clear strategy when entering these, just plucking answers from lists of viable options normally and seem to be getting lucky! I'm sure my bubble will burst :)
