Stand clear of the platform edge... in rolls the next installment of Tangy's Rail Brainbenders.

After much deliberation within the depot, the finished product is ready to enter service...

1. How many EWS/DB Schenker Class 67s have the necassary equipment to work in push/pull mode with Chiltern/Wrexham & Shropshire loco hauled sets?

2. Following the introduction of the IC125, 125mph operation was implemented on the Western Region on which date? **Month and year please**

3. Excluding those units in preservation/sold for scrap, what is the last remaining complete EMU on the NR system to retain NSE colours?

4. At which NR station do trains depart there TWICE in the SAME direction on the same working?

5. Apart from sections of route shared with Virgin West Coast, between which two stations on the XC network is "Voyager" tilt operation authorised?

6. What station in England has the longest one word name? **with NO spaces, hyphens or punctuation between words**

7. Although not rail served, rail tickets are valid to Marlborough via which two stations?

8. If trains are routed from CDF via the "City Line", what letter would be shown in the theatre box to indicate this?

9. What is the main reason why a class 91 set cannot work the EC train to/from Skipton?

0. How many platforms at BHM can be used to access the West Surburban Line?

The doors to this quiz will be closing at 20:00 on the 8th February 2011. Once closed, THAT IS IT, no concessions!

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

All I know is that Q6 is NOT that station in Wales that I'm guessing some people may answer with :)

You make a good point there :)

(and I'm sure that was a PM not a reply... ah well!)

Question 0 - do you mean platform numbers here? I assume BHM is the same as Bristol Temple Meads, where trains can only be sent east from the odd-numbered platforms?

Also, with the Voyager tilt question, I was under the impression that it was permanently banned. So therefore, are you saying that authority is still in position, waiting for any point at which the ban might be lifted, or is tilt still enabled and in use?

Well they've still got the kit, and the sets will be used on Chiltern from Monday. (There's an ECS move from Wrexham to Wembley LMD scheduled for tomorrow apparently). There are, however, multiple "correct" answers to this question, depending on how up to date Tangy's information is. If anyone wants a clue, it's a number greater then one.

Cheers,

Barry

I've tried sending my answers twice but my PM list is showing one reply in my Outbox (not sent items), and the other is completely missing.

So do you have a PM from me with my answers in?

7. Bedwyn and Swindon
8. Letter C

0. assuming you mean the line towards Five Ways, then 8

rhubarbrhubarb:

1. Four
2. October 1976
3. 365515
4. Newcastle Central
5. Oxford to Banbury
6. Wellingborough
7. Swindon and Hungerford
8. Letter C
9. Insufficient power supply for a 91 - a 91 would draw too much juice
0. Five
-----------------------------------------------------------------
tubeguru:

1. Five
2. October 1976
3. No idea.
4. No idea.
5. The information I've found on this is confusing, and mentions several locations, so I'm not even going to bother answering this.
6. Stallingborough?
7. No idea - Bedwyn and Hungerford?
8. FGW route learning does not cover the indications seen at signals C425 and C455 on platforms 6 and 7 at Cardiff Central, as we don't go down the City Line, but I do have a Cardiff Shunts book which, without being completely clear on the issue, seems to indicate that the indication is 'L', so that's my answer.
9. Because they cause the OHLE voltage to drop to the point where all other electric trains in the area stop. This was discovered during testing
0. If the crossover in the Holliday Street Tunnel is used to get trains from the station to the Down Gloucester line, then the answer should be eight, so eight. And this assumes you are going by platform numbers
-----------------------------------------------------------------
scrxisi:

1. Four
2. October 1976
3. 465193
4. Georgemas Junction
5. Oxford and Banbury
6. Stallingborough
7. Bedwyn & Swindon
8. Can only guess at “C” but it’s a 1 in 26 chance
9. AC infrastructure not suited
0. Eight
-----------------------------------------------------------------
barrykas:

1. All 30 of them. Though only eight have the necessary remote control for the fire-fighting equipment to allow them to do so unmanned when the train is being driven from the DVT. Those being 67001 (the latest to be thus fitted), 67010, 67012, 67013, 67014, 67015, 67018 and 67029.
2. May 1977.
3. Not sure. Possibly a Networker, or something obscure like a Departmental EMU?
4. At one time, 4 car Thameslink services used to do so at City Thameslink, though that's slightly cheating.
5. The Cherwell Valley Line, between Didcot Parkway and Banbury. However, CrossCountry don't currently use the tilt facility.
6. Huddersfield, at a mere 12 characters.
7. Bedwyn and Swindon.
8. Logic says C...So I'm going to guess R, for Radyr.
9. The power supply can't handle the current drawn by a 91, so any other electric train in the area would grind to a halt.
0. Eight. Platforms 5 to 12.

The actaul answers, as from the quizmaster will follow.
