So you and I are the only ones to have entered?

Shocking.

It looks like people are waiting to the last minute before submitting answers, have had two more entries today.

I must say loving some of the answers given!

This quiz is now being terminated. The following people submitted answers (in no particular order):

tubeguru:
1. I was going to say Wellingborough but then your definition of an "HST" ruled that out because EMT use other rolling stock there too. I have no idea otherwise. It's not somewhere on FGW is it? I really should really know if it is (after some thinking he then mailed me) Ah ha! Got it, you sneaky bugger - Pewsey.
2. I can't be bothered to work this out but I'll be interested in the answer (again after a some thinking time, he did submit the following answer)
-Waterloo (Merseyside) to Liverpool Central
-Walk to Lime Street
-Liverpool Lime Street to Leeds - diesel
-Leeds to Skipton - electric
-Skipton to Clapham (North Yorkshire) - diesel
3. The Sudbury Branch Line from Sudbury to Marks Tey
4. Class 08 shunter, which I shall shortly be completing my training on for use at the Oak
5. BSI
6. Class 318s only have a top speed of 90mph and are fitted with Brush traction motors as opposed to the GEC type found on 317's
7. Marsden and Greenfield. Interestingly the western end of the tunnel marks the boundary between the LNE and LNW regions. If you want to be less specific it's between Huddersfield and Stalybridge
8. 0 trains per hour - no Sunday service
9. One assumes this comes from the TV programme "3-2-1", hence "Dusty Bin"
0 (did you mean 10?) - the exact distance is 188 miles and 70 chains which is 189 miles to the nearest half mile. If you insist on rounding down then it's 188.5 miles.

9. The nickname "Dusty Bin" comes from the programme "3-2-1"

8. 0tph
9. Dusty Bin was the mascot on ancient TV game show 3-2-1 - how very original!
0. 189 is what I calculate from the timetable, but I suspect proper rail maps have it more accurately than that...

I have to admit that I was given small pointers to the answers in questions one and two, but I did work out the route from Waterloo to Clapham all on my own once I'd been informed of tangy's diabolical tactics.

Here are the answers as from the quizmaster:

1. What is the is only NR station in the UK to be served SOLELY by InterCity 125s?
Pewsey

2. I travel from Waterloo to Clapham. I travel by two electric powered trains and two diesel powered trains (in any order) and I do not double back any station en route. What is the route that I took?

If you started at London Waterloo and/or finished at Clapham Junction you will get no points at all. I was starting from Waterloo (Merseyside) and travelling to Clapham (N. Yorkshire).

--Waterloo- Liverpool Moorfields (electric)
--Moorfields- Liverpool Lime St (electric)
--Lime Street- Leeds (diesel)
--Leeds- Clapham (N. Yorkshire) (diesel)

Alternatively, to avoid going all way across to Leeds and back:
--Waterloo- Southport (electric)
--Southport- Wigan Wallgate (diesel)
--walk to Wigan NW (virtaully next door)
--Wigan NW- Lancaster (electric-pendo)
--Lancaster- Clapham (N. Yorks) (diesel)

Or you could of started at Waterloo (LU) and made your way via KGX to LDS and then across to CPY...

3. Which branch line is known as the "Gainsborough Line?"
Sudbury- Marks Tey

4. A "Gronk" is a common slang name for which class of locomotive?
Class 08 shunter

5. What kind of coupling is used on all Pacer, Sprinter and most Turbostar DMUs so that any of them can interwork with each other?
BSI (named after the company that manufactured them: Bergische Stahl Industrie (BSI))

6. Apart from being 3 coaches instead of 4, what is the only mechanical difference between a class 318 compared to a class 317?
The 318 fleet is fitted with Brush (TM 2141) traction motors whilst the 317 fleet has GEC (G315BZ) traction motors. Also the 318s have a maximum speed of 90mph whilst the 317s can do 100mph. Either answer is acceptable.

7. Standedge Tunnel lies in between which two stations?
Marsden and Greenfield

8. What is the frequency of the Marston Vale line on a Sunday?
There is no Sunday service on this line

9. How did the class 321 EMU get its nickname?
The title character from 1970s game show 3-2-1 "Dusty Bin"

0. How many rail miles (to the nearest half mile) is it between EUS and MAN via the Trent Valley and CRE?
The exact distance is 188 miles and 70 chains, therefore is 189 to the NEAREST half mile (there are 80 chains in one mile).

Lets see how many of you got all ten correct....
