Thank You everyone for your interest and support!

I'm now sitting in an Internet cafe, waiting for time to go to the airport and thought I should comment on the to-be-confirmed-record run...

Yes, we were aiming for 23:38 which should statistically be the average on a day without MAJOR delays. In fact, had it not been for the Arsenal game and/or Heathrow hickups last night I'm pretty confident we would have hit 23:38 exactly!

Actually, it turned out we made it with the last possible train. The 00.01 never arrived in H123. We ere stuck there (celebrating) for at least another 10 minutes or so.

Generally speaking we had a fair mix of good and bad luck during the day but obviously no severe problems.

This morning we turned in all the evidence at Guinness' office (getting a receipt at least). They said they'd be in touch shortly... I responded -"In a few months then?" The receptionist smiled back in silent agreement. However, we believe the evidence is plentiful, satisfactory and formally correct - so we feel fairly confident about the outcome...

I'm definitely planning a proper write-up in the near future.

As a matter of interest is this the first time that (subject to confirmation) the GWR has left our shores?

I don't know if Colm Mulvaney was from Northern Ireland or the Republic.

If it was the latter then the answer to your question is no.

I'm not even sure that all of the people who have held the record are even from this planet, let alone from the UK :D

Belatedly congratulations Hakan. If only Mrs Editorsfoot could be convinced to make an attempt we could put up a Scandinavian challenge to the Scandinavian record!

I agree. I believe it's a very good route, but it can most likely be improved. To me the quest for a good route goes soemthing like this:
1) Get all possible raw data (time tables mainly).
2) Build a model around this to imitate real life. E.g. put probabilities (or rather distributions) for delays etc. This is real complicated and a lot of guessing goes in here along with experience.
3) Create an algorithm to find the statistically best route within the constraints of the model. This type of problem is known as "Travelling salesman problem" and is known to be immensly complex to solve in a complete way, but there are many ways to heuristically find suboptimal solutions.

There you are!

Does that last statement mean the route is the computer best guess but not perfect.

Yes - something like that.

With an improved model (e.g. more realistic bus times based on expected congestions, more details in change(walk/run) time within station and things like that) the computer would probably eventually find a slightly better route...

How could you possibly infer that someone is being sexist by asking that?

And yes, I think she is.

Well I'm not one for political correctness so it wouldn't even have registered with me if you hadn't qualified it first.

I believe one of RR's kids might of been a girl and done it with him, although I can't quite remember what he said, Geoff?
