Glen and Iain 25/4/2012 (The attempt that wouldn't die)

Post by The Raven »

On Wednesday 25/5/12 Myself and Iain attempted a full network, trying to get a time under 18 hours. Unfortunately we bailed with 11 stations to go. More details to follow.

seems you were coming down the Met just as someone decided to throw themselves under a train at Finchley road. and the Jubilee was screwed in two places and the whole line effectively suspended, and the southern end of the Northern Line broke. that tube, eh? so damn reliable.

still, at least the tunnel didn't collapse on you as the Bakerloo line is reportedly doing right now ... if it IS that, and it's under the river that could really screw with any people planning attempts (such as myself) if it's out for a long time for repairs!

anyway, looking forward to reading your report!

For those that don't know I was supporting on this attempt.

The tube was absolutely shit yesterday. To name a few:

1. Watford train turned up 3 minutes early on a 1 minute change. Ruining a loop connection.
2. Northern was so slow down the High Barnet branch, spent atleast 10 minutes in platforms.
3. Charing Cross train turned into a Bank train just before Camden Town, where we spend 10 minutes waiting for the next Charing Cross.
4. Met suspended between Algate - Wembley Park, yet no trains south of HOTH.

I was considering doing an attempt myself yesterday, but a combination of factors (including the weather forecast and maintenance dispute) caused me to change my mind. Given the service, I'm glad I didn't bother.

I was scouting/commuting yesterday at Harrow on the Hill when someone decided to through themselves under a train at Finchley Road. It was very annoying for others - my friend Maurice spent 10 minutes for a train to Pinner and I arrived 5 minutes before him. I had to wait 20 minutes for an Uxbridge train. Meanwhile everyone (no, EVERYONE) was congregating on Platform 2 for the 1719 for Marylebone (it ran late, bless it).

One commuter got VERY angry when she found out it was a person under a train rather than a signal failure (too obscene to print here).

Not the best of ideas to do an attempt during a strike!

Every time I pass Hayes and Southall on the up main, I always wonder if someone is going to jump off in front of me. No body parts under my trains yet ...

We knew the risks when we chose to do it on a strike day. We talked about it before and if it had proved impossible to proceed we had plans to try a DLR/tram/all modes challenge

I think we were both pretty chuffed with what we achieved in spite of all the issues - if it hadn't been for a vanishing train at Chiswick Park just before heading down to Heathrow, we'd have been three minutes inside Andi's GWR from a few years back. We rejigged to try to avoid the problem areas as far as possible, although inevitably this is hard as you tick off stations as you have less options without wasting time

but before it was confirmed what really happened, there were suggestions of collapse, flooding and injuries/death! But not the case.

Most of the inaccurate, highly negative reports were reported by the RMT though (surprise, surprise).

Anyone know what the emergency engineering work was at the north end of the Bakerloo line on the day of our attempt?
