The cost of Tube Challenging

Post by Sillert, V.I. »

Has anyone worked out the cost of a tube challenge?

It's not just your Travelcard.

Seems to me the list could include:

Overnight accommodation
Getting to/from the Starting/Finishing Station
Getting to/from London/England/Europe
Food/Drink/Medication
Special Clothing
Bribes to LU staff (only if you're **** ****)

Wonder what the record is for the most expensive tube challenge attempt?

It can be quite expensive if you go into detail ...

For me and Lars the immediate costs were roughly:

2x Return flight Malmoe-Stansted ~£120
2x Stansted Express Return ~ £40
2x2x Off peak Zone 1-6D ~ £30
2x Peak Zone 1-6D ~ £27
2x2x B&B ~£180
Taxi Heathrow-Amersham ~ £70
Food & drink ~ £20
Stop watch ~ £4
Parking reimbursment ~ £20

Total: ~£511

Ouch! - I didn't realise what an expensive pastime I picked up...

Yeah, that's good.

Nobody has actually answered the question (besides Hakan, and obviously his expenses are above average) yet! So here I go:

Accomodation the night before: Well, I pay monthly rent, but I'm going to say free.

Travel to starting station: If it's Amersham (usually is), then it's £7 in a Taxi.

Travelcard: I usually buy one Peak Travelcard and one Off-Peak using my Young Persons' Railcard to be used in reserve (although I didn't last time, and of course, my travelcard failed), totalling £19 after rounding.

Food & Drink: A couple of bottles of water, some sandwiches, and other snacks, usually no more than £10.

Travel from starting station: If I finish early enough, c2c or 'one' back into the city! More realistically, it depends on what accomodation I've booked. Last time the taxi for three was £30, so on my own I'm going to guess £20.

Accomodation after the event: Travelodge Thurrock was £51, but hopefully I'll find somewhere a lot nearer Upminster next time - should cut down on the taxi fare, too.

Total: 7 + 19 + 10 + 20 + 51 = £107. A whole year's pocket money!

Have a look on laterooms.com - in seconds I just found a room only a couple of miles away for 40 pounds, or 44 pounds for a room that sleeps 2 (didn't say if it was a double or twin room though).
