GWR Independent Witnesses

It seems that Tube Challengers are not the only people that suffer with GWR rules and regs...

What does count as independent then? Or should the question be, what rules someone out from being independent.

My missus wouldn't act as witness anyway, to my upcoming attempt, but had hoped to rope in an old university friend and her husband, that live close to to early morning start point, and two colleagues to witness the finish. Any one know if those associations are still too close to be independent?! I assumed flesh, blood and marriage would definitely be ruled out.

Under the current Guinness interpretation, it would appear that it only takes for you to know the witnesses for them to then be considered inappropriate. They refuse to respond to my question of how you are supposed to get truly random, unknown members of the public to be in specific locations at specific times and be trusted with stopwatches etc.
