Picked up 2 x GWR's in my mid 40's and actually much fitter now...

Anyway I always said speed isn't essential, of course it helps but route planning and LUCK are the biggest factors...

I was surprised when it turned out to be an old geezer  I thought you needed to be under 35 and super fit to belt it down the hill from West Ruislip to Ickenham in about 3 minutes. And up god knows how many staircases.
Current best: 19:51:10 (2014). Hopefully that will be broken in 2018 :-)

It's theoretically possible to get 16:14 with an 8 min WR - Ickenham....

I did some test runs on Saturday (before and after the R15) - and although most were within the timings I need them to be, by the end of the day my fitness (or lack of it) was definitely telling to the point where I couldn't be bothered to run my last couple of sections (so I still don't know how practical a sneaky shortcut might be...).

And that's without having done Edgware - Canons Park, or any of the possible routes from Cockfosters to HB! (Though on the other hand I did set a new 100m record through Stratford station subway, which isn't needed for my route at all!)

I'm older than this "old gezeer" and as I discovered at the last Zone 1 I can still outrun most tube challengers 30 years younger than me.

Well I've always thought I could still be doing this at fifty, another 8 years left in me yet at least, then.

Being fit sure helps, but you don't need to be the fastest - just fast enough! I am not the fastest here if you look at the parkrun times. So you therefore just have to have a solid route on paper, and then just have repeated goes on the network, until you get a day when nothing breaks and perhaps a little bit of luck too. That's exactly what we had in Aug 2013, and sounds like what these guys had here! :-)
