Planning on doing the challenge around May/June 2013

Post by andytube »

I'm thinking of doing the challenge maybe half-term week in May 2013. Maybe on the Thursday, so I can have Friday as my recovery day. Will be doing the challenge with a mate. Of course we'll be challenging the record (I believe a lot of it is down to luck).

I'm hoping that the roads are a bit quieter during half-term week, so the buses can go a bit quicker. Or is that wishful thinking?

Ideally, I'd like there to be other people doing the challenge on the same day as me, purely for the purposes of having a race against each other as well as a race against the clock. We can exchange mobile phone details before the challenge and keep each other updated throughout the day. And have a bit of banter.

I'm not revealing my start or planned finish stations beforehand, but if anyone else is doing it that day, we can reveal our start point to each other at 4.30ish that morning. Otherwise, I'll just create a twitter account.
Current best: 19:51:10 (2014). Hopefully that will be broken in 2018 :-)

Whilst a portion of getting a good/record time is down to luck, I'd wholly disagree in saying that you can challenge the record purely down to having luck on your side - if you haven't got a good enough route in the first place then no matter how much luck you have, you won't set a good time!!

Regarding the buses, my experience of the roads around me is that they are busier during half terms, but that might just be my local roads!!

statistically if u believe that 1st time and ur hit it 1st time the record u more than likely to be disappointed!

only Neil Blake and jack welsby can share that honour recently since 2000 (and before anybody says it Marc Gawley was 2nd attempt test days count as attempts if u do 17h on them) As ur more than aware the Met changes in 2016 will reset the record and i predict lots of people out that day whenever it will be!.

If it is your first attempt then u see subtle differances from on paper to actual physical timings buses will NOT run to timetable trains will be sometimes not there when u expect them to be and ur never know one of ur team members might even come down with a bug (starkey).

Not to put u off though its good to hear the enthuaism just go ahead do it.

I'm still having a pop at the record. Even if I miss it by 2 hours.

Anyone else planning on doing the challenge around that time?

I didn't realise there was a Z1 challenge on the Friday of that week. Perhaps I'll aim for another week. Will definately be around May/June as I don't fancy starting on a dark morning.

Just checked my route. In my spreadsheet I forgot to add one of the section times, so it's just added 31 minutes to my planned route :-(

Haha, I think that last statement is correct. Was hoping to go sub-17, but not now. Still a part of my route in the middle that I'm not happy with, so back to the drawing board. The way I see this challenge is that there are thousands of ways to do this....
