So, will I be able to buy a 1-9 travelcard from a ticket machine at a zone 6 station, or will I need an open ticket office?
All tube stations have ticket machines so far as I'm aware. Tfl website does list facilities at all stations.
I've used ticket machines at:
Chesham
Chorleywood
Hatton Cross
Hounslow West
Hounslow East
High Barnet

When myself and Andi started at Upminster we had to buy zone 1-6 travelcards. Luckily when we finished at Amersham the barriers were open.

Irrelevant post: I've just noticed the spelling mistake in your signature.

Nazis. You are pluralising it, so you don't put an apostrophe in.

Don't talk about pluralisation, tubeguru. You put 'mistake' when there were 2 mistakes, therefore you fail.

I was referring to only one mistake, not TWO (you used "2" where you should have used the word "two"), so your point is rather childish.
Come on, you're making this easy for me.

And you should say "Andi and I". This is because removing either party from the sentence (so, removing Andi or removing yourself) should still leave the sentence grammatically correct:
"When Andi started at Upminster..." - all good.
"When myself started at Upminster..." - no good.

If I remove Andi from a sentence this is what I get:
When and I started at Upminster...

When started at Upminster
