Re: Could one train travel the entire tube network?

Why have a reverse at Moor Park when you could go direct from Ricky to Watford (Met) via the North Curve? Very true. The station-to-station database obviously doesn't have a time for Rickmansworth to Croxley, and the NW corner was so uncomplicated compared to some of the other stuff that this just ...

Re: Could one train travel the entire tube network?

Revised version. The route now has no Overground shortcut, hence longer -- but not that much longer. Times are calculated on the basis of not stopping at any station previously visited unless required for shunting. Here is the route: MET: Amersham - C&L - Chesham - Moor Pk - Watford - Wembley Pk - J...

Re: Could one train travel the entire tube network?

D*mn. I was half expecting an objection along the lines of it not being in the spirit of the problem to go from Willesden Jct to Gunnersbury via Overground, as that would technically not fall within the description of "travel the entire tube network". I was completely unprepared for an actual techni...

Re: Could one train travel the entire tube network?

This scenario has been nagging at me occasionally, so I finally decided to crunch the numbers. There are not that many options for the route, given that there is only one access point for many of the lines (Metropolitan/Jubilee at Wembley Park, Jubilee/Bakerloo at Baker St, Piccadilly/Victoria at Fi...

Re: Could one train travel the entire tube network?

Would it be possible to "hire" a train or two and do the whole network on Christmas Day! Lol Would require a lot of backtracking! The mind boggles at what this would cost. Presumably all the control rooms would have to be manned (at Sunday rates) even if there is no other traffic on the network? An...

FNC on a Saturday = ??

From what I've read, the conventional wisdom seems to be that it is unfeasible, or even impossible, to attempt an FNC completion on a weekend. I have been trying to find out whether any Tube stations really are closed at weekends any more, as used to be the case, but this information seems peculiarl...

Re: 1st FNC attempt after Easter

Cost: £34 per person on Oyster PAYG Ouch!! Using Oyster, shouldn't this be capped at less than that? When maximum fares are incurred for not touching out or exceeding the allowed time before exiting the system, these do not count against daily caps. What he said. I believe we incurred one "penalty"...

Re: 1st FNC attempt after Easter

Well done - I think you've broken Clive's recently-set record for the longest FNC! :-)
Not what we were going for, obviously, but yes -- we are now last in the Top Times table, at 112th!

Re: 1st FNC attempt after Easter

Firstly, sorry about the confusion in my initial message -- Tuesday 3 April was the day of the attempt. Success! ...sort of. We have a completion, only not during the same day. We missed out on T4 in the evening, as I feared we might. Having started at Uxbridge at 05:18:37, we first fell behind arou...

Helsinki Metro

The latest extension to the Helsinki Metro, known as the West Metro, was opened last November after considerable controversy, wildly over budget and more than a year late. The Helsinki Metro now has 25 stations and two lines, although basically it's one line that forks at one end into two branches w...

Re: Who Are You? Tell Us!

I only just discovered this thread, though I've been lurking here for a few months now. My name is Jaakko Mäntyjärvi (or Mantyjarvi, in case the system does not like umlauts). I am 54 and live (as my screen name indicates) in Helsinki, Finland. I am a freelance translator and, in my parallel career,...

Re: Tube Olympics 2018: Event 5- Full Network

But there is a provision in the rules that any rules lawyer worth their salt could argue applies to this probably quite rare case. Consider: The rules state that the clock starts when the doors close on the train departing from the first station. It is not too much of a leap to claim that if arrivin...

Re: Tube Olympics 2018: Event 5- Full Network

There is a case to be made for a hotel lift NOT being private transport: - it can be used by anyone, not just you (as opposed to a private car) - it does not cost anything extra to use it (as opposed to a taxi) - although you have some control over it, you do not have complete control as to when it ...
